Mbarara University of Science and Technology, MUST 2023/2024 admission requirement for all the courses at the undergraduate and diploma level is updated every year. Therefore, this article contains the full list of all undergraduate courses coupled with their general requirements.
For admission into programs of study at the Mbarara University, MUST for any first degree, an applicant must have the following requirements for successful admission.
MBARARA UNIVERSITY, MUST UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The minimum requirements for admission to any Undergraduate degree are:
- Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or it’s equivalent with at least 5 passes
- Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or it’s equivalent with at least 2 principal passes.
- Diploma holders must have passed with at least a credit.
The minimum requirements for admission to any Diploma program are:
- Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or it’s equivalent with at least 5 passes
- Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or it’s equivalent with at least 1 principal pass and two subsidiary passes.
The minimum requirements for admission to any Certificate program are:
- Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or it’s equivalent with at least 5 passes
Additionally, for international applicants:
- Applicants whose first language or medium of instruction is not English must provide evidence from a recognized English language training institution that they have sufficient command of the English language.
- Have a documentary evidence of Internship Training indicating disciplines and dates.
- International applicants should have their documents verified by NCHE.
- International applicants should have their degree certificate and transcript translated and converted into an equivalent of Ugandan Universities’ CGPA
- Be registered or eligible for registration with Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
A current certificate of good standing with the Medical Practitioners’ Council of the country of origin.
SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology
1. Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in either Physics, Biology or Mathematics, and at least a subsidiary pass any other A’ Level Subjects
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering
- A Diploma in a relevant Medical Technology
- Other Diplomas approved by the University to be equivalent to any of those stated above
2. Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Physics and Mathematics, and at least a subsidiary pass in either Chemistry, Geography, Computer studies, Technical Drawing, Economics or Biology
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering
- A Diploma in a relevant Medical Technology
- Other Diplomas approved by the University to be equivalent to any of those stated above
3. Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Mathematics and Physics and at least a subsidiary pass in Chemistry or Economics
4. Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering and Environmental Management
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in either Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics, and at least a subsidiary pass in any other A’ level Subject
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering
- A Diploma in a relevant Medical Technology
- Other Diplomas approved by the University to be equivalent to any of those stated above
Faculty of Business and Management Sciences
1. Bachelor of Business Administration
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes at A’level with at least one being either in Economics or Mathematics and a credit in Mathematics at UCE or Subsidiary Mathematics at A’level
Diploma Entry
- Hold UDBS or ODBS or HFM Diploma recognized by the University or must have completed at least level one of CPA, ACCA, or CIMA
2. Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes at A’level with at least one being either in Economics or Mathematics and a credit in Mathematics at UCE or Subsidiary Mathematics at A’level
Diploma Entry
- Hold UDBS or ODBS or HFM Diploma recognized by the University or must have completed at least level one of CPA, ACCA, or CIMA
3. Bachelor of Science in Economics
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes at A’level with at least one being either in Economics or Mathematics and a credit in Mathematics at UCE or Subsidiary Mathematics at A’level
Diploma Entry
- Hold a Diploma in any Business related field for an accredited institution
4. Bachelor of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in any A’level subjects
Diploma Entry
- Hold a Diploma in Business related field with a Credit score from a recognized institution
Faculty of Computing and Informatics
1. Bachelor of Computer Science
Direct Entry
- Two Principal Passes one of which MUST be in Mathematics and the other in any of the following subjects:- Physics, Chemistry, and/ or Economics
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any ICT field
2. Bachelor of Information Technology
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in any ‘A’ level subjects and a credit in Mathematics at ‘O’ level (UCE) or Subsidiary Mathematics at A’ level
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any ICT field
- Holders of CCNA must have certificate of completion of all four levels
3. Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes with one being in Mathematics (passed with minimum grade of D) and the other in any other science subject
- A credit in Mathematics at ‘O’ level (UCE)
Diploma Entry
- Hold a Diploma in Software Engineering or Computer Science or Computer Programming or Information Technology or Computing and Data Science or Computer Networks and Data Security or Computer Forensics and Cyber Security.
- Diploma in any other field that will be deemed relevant
Mature Entry
- Must be 25 years and above and fulfill the Mature Age Entry Scheme requirements of Mbarara University of Science and Technology
Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies
1. Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Livelihoods and Farm Production
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes at UACE or its equivalent in the following subjects: Agriculture, Foods and Nutrition, Biology or Chemistry and at least a subsidiary pass in any other A’ Level subject
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any Agricultural related field
2. Bachelor of Science in Gender and Applied Women Health
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes at A’level
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any relevant field
3. Bachelor of Science in Planning and Community Development
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes at A’level
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any relevant field
Faculty of Medicine
1. Advanced Diploma in Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Diploma Entry
- Diploma or higher qualification in any relevant field
- Evidence of prior experience of working with children and adolescents
- Must be able to commit time to study and to undertake clinical work with children on a weekly basis at their work throughout the program
- Should demonstrate basic IT skills
2. Diploma in Counselling
Direct Entry
- One principal pass and two subsidiary passes in any A’level subjects
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any relevant field
3. Diploma in Emergency Medicine
Diploma Entry
- Clinical Officer or Registered Nurse
- Evidence of completion of 2 years post-qualification clinical practice
- Full registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council or Nursing Council or Allied Health Professionals’ Council, or equivalent
- A current Certificate of Good Standing with the relevant Medical Council
- Three letters of reference/recommendation from either former teachers or professional colleagues
- Evidence of an adequate knowledge of clinical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology) which may be further assessed by a pre-course paper.
4. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
- Registered with Allied Health Professionals’ Council
- Submit two reference reports one from the current employer(s) and the other from the institution where the Diploma training was done.
- Sit and pass an entrance examination consisting of three written papers in Clinical Chemistry, Haematology & Blood Transfusion, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Parasitology.
6.Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any Bio-medical Sciences.
- Be registered by the Allied Health Professionals’ Council or the Uganda Nurses and Midwives’ Council
- Preference will be given to those with experience of working under primary health care in a rural setting
- The candidates who meet the above criteria will be required to sit for an entrance examination in General Paper, Anatomy, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Physiology
7. Bachelor of Nursing Science
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics
Diploma Entry
- Registered Nurses or Midwives or Comprehensive Nurses or Psychiatric Nurses or Paediatric Nurses
- Registered or eligible for registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council
- Should have passed science subjects especially Mathematics and Chemistry at ‘O’ level
- Sit and pass an entrance examination in Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and General Paper
8. Bachelor of Phar-macy
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in Phar-macy.
- Should have passed Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English at O’ Level with at least a credit.
- Sit and pass an entrance examination consisting of three written papers in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Natural products, Introduction to Dispensing and Physiology
9. Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in Phar-macy or Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology.
- Should have passed Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English at O’ Level with at least a credit
10. Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Biology and one of either Physics or Mathematics
Diploma Entry
- Diploma in any one of the following: Occupational Therapy, Orthopaedic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Orthopaedic Technology, Exercise Science, Nursing or Sports Science.
- At least a credit in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at O’ Level or its equivalent
- Sit and pass pre-entry exams
Faculty of Science
1. Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology
- A UCE certificate or it’s equivalent with a credit in two Science subjects i.e. Chemistry, Biology or Physics and a pass in Mathematics and English
2. Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology
Direct Entry
- A principal pass in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and a pass in Mathematics obtained at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or it’s equivalent
Diploma Entry
- Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology with at least a credit pass or its equivalent from a recognized institution
3. Bachelor of Science with Education (Physical)
Direct Entry
- Two principal passes in Mathematics and Physics

You can go ahead and do other courses asides Nursing with your qualification but it can only be a health science related course.

In 2015 September, I joined Chuka University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing and graduated 18th October 2019 with the second class upper division. I am scheduled for nursing clinical internship from May 2020 which will go for one year (up to May 2021). After which I plan to join a medical school in Uganda.
I want to join a medical school accredited by Kenya medicine and dentistry practitioner board. I have learned that the reputable Makerere University is among such universities in Uganda. Please, do I qualify for a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery at the university as a self-sponsored student?
