The aim of the fellowship is in order to improve applicants knowledge of the Icelandic language, culture, and society. The Arni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies is an academic research institute on the university level, operating on an independent budget and answering directly to the Ministry of Education.The amount of the fellowship is based in principle on travel expenses to and from Iceland, plus living expenses while in the country.

The Snorri Sturluson Fellowships are granted to writers, translators and scholars (not to university students) in the field of humanities, from outside Iceland. Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

The Scholarships are one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. The aim of the program is to create a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.

SNORRI STURLUSON FELLOWSHIPS ELIGIBILITY

Scholars are selected on the following criteria:

  • Citizens from outside Iceland are eligible to apply. Preference will, as a rule, be given to a candidate from Eastern or Southern Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America or Oceania.
  • The Snorri Sturluson Fellowships are granted to writers, translators and scholars (not to university students) in the field of humanities, from outside Iceland, to enable them to stay in Iceland for a period of at least three months, in order to improve their knowledge of the Icelandic language, culture, and society.
  • Preference will, as a rule, be given to a candidate from Eastern or Southern Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America or Oceania.
  • Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

SNORRI STURLUSON FELLOWSHIPS APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • There are no special application forms for the fellowships. Application must include:

  • Only applications that have been submitted (with the International Office and registered on the website of the scholarship) before October 31, 2019 will be considered.
