The University of Nairobi (UoN) UNSA seeks to improve voting and election processes for its student. Therefore, it is pleased to announce the adoption of an Election Portal, that would make it easy for students to vote for their favorite candidate as well as be voted for.

All students have equal opportunities to participate and have their say. Its all about students and the Electoral Commission is only a referee to ensures fairness, accountability and transparency in this process. Student Council eballot system enable all students to exercise their rights stress free in choosing their representatives. Please remember to vote in your favorite team on time.

The UNSA 2020 election platform is live and will be conducted online. The election platform is accessible via:

The system shall be opening for voting between 8am and 5pm

REQUIREMENT TO ACCESS THE EBALLOT SYSTEM

To access the platform, students are required:

  • Access to computer or smartphone with internet connection.
  • AD user credentials. AD user credentials are the same credentials as used on SOMAS and eclass platforms.  Thus your username is derived from Registration number without the slashes.
    • For instance, given the registration number B11/9999/2030 username is b1199992030
  • In case you forgot or have not activated AD credentials, please visit adstudents.uonbi.ac.ke and click on forgotten password

STEPS OF VOTING FOR YOUR FAVORITE TEAMS

The under listed steps are necessary for voting:

  1.  Login to eballot.uonbi.ac.ke
  2. Navigate to My Ballots – you are enlisted in one COLLEGE for  which you are eligible to vote.
  3. Click on the red poll icon once the polls are open
  4. Select your favorite team to VOTE → then submit your VOTE  by clicking the button

To get to practice how this works, there’s always a MOCK election conducted before the election day.

How to retrieve or reset the AD password used to access the e-ballot system?

  1. Visit https://smis.uonbi.ac.ke and update your profile by providing all the required information.
  2. Wait for between one and half (1.5) to  two (2) hours for  the correct email address to be added to your AD account
  3. Visit http://adstudents.uonbi.ac.ke
  4. Click on forgot/expired Password Link and follow the prompts
  5. To complete password reset a verification code will be send to your UONBI email account provided in your SMIS portal.
  6. Kindly write to Customer care helpdesk customercare@uonbi.ac.ke using your university email in case you are unable to reset the password, provide student Full Names, Registration Number, UoN email, Campus, School, NAtional ID/passport and Mobile Number as already provided in the Student portal.

SUMMARY GUIDELINES FOR CANDIDATES

Please go through the guidelines for your information:

  1. Students can only contest in teams. Interested students align themselves into teams of 7 students which include:
    1. Chairperson,
    2. Vice Chairperson,
    3. Secretary General,
    4. Treasurer,
    5. Sports and social welfare representative
    6. International students representative
    7. Special needs students representative.
  2. Aspiring teams shall be required to come up with team name and symbol/logo at least 5 days before collection of nomination forms.
  3. Interested students pick nomination forms from the electoral commission 14 days prior to the date of the Electoral College election.
  4. A non-refundable amount of Ksh 3000 (Students Council) and Ksh 2000 (Electoral College) shall be paid as nomination fee. The fees shall be collected by the University Finance officer on behalf of the electoral commission.
  5. Candidates who shall have picked nomination forms are required to collect signatures from students in support of their candidature.
    1. 700 signatures for each aspirant for the Students Council and
    2. 300 signatures for each aspirant at the Electoral College. Candidates for the International Students’ representative shall be required to collect 50 signatures from International students and the Special needs representatives shall be required to collect 30 signatures from special needs students
  6. Interested candidates will then be required to get academic clearance from respective deans and directors of faculties and schools that they come from.
  7. Interested candidates are required to acquire Good Conduct certificates/ police clearance from the National Police Service.
  8. 8 Aspiring teams shall submit/return duly signed nomination papers to the electoral commission 9 days prior to the election date between 8 am and 5 pm.
  9. The electoral commission meets all aspiring teams upon return of nomination forms for clearance and shall announce and publish, within 2 days, successfully nominated aspiring teams.
  10. Official campaigns shall begin immediately after the publication of the list of nominees by the Electoral commission and shall last for 7 days ending 24 hours before the elections date.
  11. Aspiring teams appoint a maximum of 2 agents per polling station in the students’ electoral process who shall have the right to witness the voting and counting process.
  12. Voting. This shall be done only by students whose names appear in the voter registrar and should provide a school/national ID for identification.
  13. The commission shall determine, declare and publish the results of an election immediately after close of polling.
  14. The commission shall:
    1. Verify, announce and declare, in the prescribed form, the final results from each polling station in the Electoral College
    2. Publish the polling result forms on an online public portal on the University website, in liaison with the Director of ICTC
    3. Provide each aspiring team or their agents with a copy of the declaration of the final results
  15. The aspiring team that obtains highest number of votes shall be declared the winner.
  16. Whenever there is a tie, such teams shall participate in a fresh election until one team wins.
  17. If only one aspiring team is nominated, that aspiring team shall be declared elected unopposed.
  18. The winning team shall be sworn in on the following morning after their election
  19. The winning teams then select amongst themselves 3 representatives who will form the Electoral College that will vote in the Students Council.
  20. Election of the student’s council is then conducted within 30 days after the election of the Electoral College representatives.
  21. The winning team in the Students council is then sworn immediately after their announcement by the electoral commission.
