Among the many requirements needed for admission into the University of Mpumalanga, UMP, the admission point score is the most necessary. For those who might be asking what an admission point score means — it is an accumulation of grade points needed for admission into the University. The UMP APS for various courses is determined by using a standard calculation formula which will be stated in this article.
Every year, the management of the University of Mpumalanga publishes a standard Admission Point Score for all courses which is used as a criterion for selecting prospective students into undergraduate programmes. Bear in mind that the UMP APS is only used as a selection criterion for undergraduate admission and not for postgraduate studies.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE UNIVERSITY OF MPUMALANGA, UMP ADMISSION POINT SCORE
The formula used in calculating the UMP admission point score is a summation of your seven (7) best high school subjects. Life Orientation is included as a compulsory subject for your NSC qualification but is excluded from the APS points calculation — meaning it contributes zero points to your final APS. A pass in Life Orientation is still required to be eligible for university admission. The total points from your seven best subjects (excluding Life Orientation’s numerical value) give you your APS.
The official UMP APS conversion scale is as follows:
| NSC Achievement Level | Percentage Range | APS Points |
|---|---|---|
| Level 7 | 75% – 100% | 7 |
| Level 6 | 70% – 74% | 6 |
| Level 5 | 60% – 69% | 5 |
| Level 4 | 50% – 59% | 4 |
| Level 3 | 40% – 49% | 3 |
| Level 2 | 30% – 39% | 2 |
| Level 1 | 0% – 29% | 1 |
To be eligible for degree-level study, a candidate must have passed the NSC with a minimum of Level 2 in all subjects used for the APS calculation.
Since you have the formula for calculating the University of Mpumalanga Admission Point Score, it is recommended you use an APS Calculator to get the best result.
