For admission into programmes of study at the Justo Mwale University, JMU for any first degree or second degree, an applicant must have the following requirements for a successful admission.
JUSTO MWALE UNIVERSITY, JMU UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
The admission requirements differ depending on what you want to study. The criteria for certificate programmes, diplomas, degrees, masters and docterate is listed below:
Entry requirements for all degree programmes:
- Bachelor of Arts or Science degree shall have a minimum of five (5) ‘O’ level credits or better including English Language.
- Diploma programmes shall have at least three (3) relevant ‘O’ level credits or better including English Language.

Entry requirements for a Postgraduate degree Programme
- A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited University in a subject or subjects relevant to the course applied for.
Entry requirements for a Masters Degree Programme
- For admission to the Master’s Degree of a candidate shall either hold an honours degree of the or a qualification from an approved institution of higher learning, deemed to be equivalent to an honours degree of the JMU University.
- Candidates who hold unclassified degrees should have a credit or, a distinction in the subject of the intended Master’s Degree.
Entry requirements for a Doctorate Degree Programme
The Directorate for Post-graduate and Research studies is responsible for all supervised doctoral degrees as well as senior doctorates by published works.

Candidates for the PhD may qualify for admission if they have:
- a master’s degree
- an honours degree, or a 4-year bachelor’s degree, plus at least 1 year’s registration for the master’s degree
- a 3-year bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years registration for a master’s degree
Formal application for admission is made through the Directorate of postgraduate and research studies. Candidates are registered provisionally until their research proposals have been formally approved by the respective faculty.
Students registering for the PhD degree will be formally allocated a supervisor, who is responsible for providing guidance.
