A Business school or Biz school as many also call it is a university-level institution that offers degrees in business administration or management. They are educational institutions that specialize in teaching courses and programs related to business and/or management.

In some places, business schools stand alone as a school sectioned into faculty or college or department that teaches exclusively business and management like the Lagos Business School while others are part of an institution that teaches all other courses such as science, arts, humanities etc. An instance is Harvard University, they have a business school called Harvard Business School that teaches business and management related courses coupled with other courses such as Mathematics, Biochemistry, English, Medicine, Public Health and so on. However, in this article, we would be concentrating on the top business schools in Ghana. There are about forty (40) business schools in Ghana, some part of a tertiary institution while others stand alone. They offer courses ranging from marketing, accounting, business administration and human resources management. But let’s take a quick look at the Republic of Ghana

LIST OF TOP BUSINESS SCHOOLS IN GHANA

1. University of Ghana Business School, Accra (UGBS)

Founded in 1948, University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian national public universities. University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) is a premier business school in the sub-region focused on “developing world-class human resources and capabilities to meet national development needs and global challenges, through quality teaching, learning, research and knowledge dissemination.”

(UGBS) offers various undergraduate, masters and PhD programmes in its six academic departments – Department of Accounting, Department of Finance, Department of Marketing & Entrepreneurship, Department of Operations and Management Information Systems (OMIS), Department of Organisation and Human Resource Management (OHRM), and Department of Public Administration and Health Services Management (PAHSM). Some of the master’s programmes including EMBA, MBA, MSc Development Finance, MSc Information Systems, and MA Marketing Strategy. Some of the courses are run in a flexible mode (evenings, weekends and sandwich) to enable students to pursue graduate studies while working.

2. Central University College

Central University is an educational Initiative of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) established in October 1988. It started originally as a pastoral training college but was permitted by the National Accreditation Board in Ghana to teach other courses which are now divided into eight faculties. Central Business School (CBS) is one of them. It was originally called Central Business School the School of Business Management and Administration (SBMA) when it was established in 1998. But its change was in order to reflect international standards and incorporate the merging of undergraduate and graduate programmes.it is also referred to as the largest private business school in Ghana. CBS is widely acclaimed for flexible modes of teaching through its weekend and evening programme. Accounting, Banking & Finance, Human Resource Management, Management and Public Administration,  Marketing, Agribusiness Management are the six departments in CBS and they take a wide range of courses such as Accounting, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Banking & Finance, Agribusiness Management, Management Studie,  Finance,  General Management, Marketing, Marketing Research and Human Resource Management.

3. Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration GIMPA

This is a public university spread over four campuses (Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Takoradi) and made up of four schools and one of which is the GIMPA Business School. The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) was established in 1961 as a joint Ghana Government/United Nations (UN) special fund project. Originally called the Institute of Public Administration, it was set up as one of the key strategic institutions to develop the public administrative system, to provide civil servants with administrative and professional competence, and to plan and administer national, regional and local services. GIMPA Business School’s vision is to be a “centre of excellence in the development and application of business, management and entrepreneurial knowledge.” GBS provides a wide range of courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Some of the courses include Bachelor degrees in Accounting, Economics and Mathematics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Operation and Supply Chain Management, Hospitality And Tourism Management, Procurement Management, Project Management. 4. KNUST School of Business, Kumasi

KNUST School of Business is one of the colleges under the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. The KNUST School of Business (KSB) was established in 2005 from the 29-year old Department of Economics and Industrial management which began by offering a Post-graduate Diploma in Industrial Management, followed by an M.A. in Industrial Management and MBA Programmes in 2002. KSB now has a broad range of academic disciplines that reflects industrial trends for undergraduate and graduates in Ghana and Africa and has an ambitious vision to increase by 100% employability rate for KSB graduates within the next 10 years. 5. Accra Business School

This is another Christian school that integrates faith and learning into its scholarly environment. It is affiliated with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Australian Institute of Business (AIB) and Awards for Training and Higher Education, UK (ATHE). They offer business courses across undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. BSc Business Administration and Global Leadership, Msc Banking and Finance, PGD Business Administration, Level 6 Extended Diploma in Finance, Level 6, Extended Diploma in Management, Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management, Executive Mini- MBA, Executive Certificate in Business Administration and Chartered Global Management Accountant(CGMA).

6. University of Cape Coast School of Business

The University of Cape Coast is a public collegiate research university established in 1962 and located in Cape Coast. Management, Accounting, Finance, Marketing & Supply Chain Management and Human Resource Management, Professional & Management Development Unit (PMDU), Centre for Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development (CESED) and some of the courses and facilities in this Business school.

7. University of Professional Studies, Accra UPSA

UPSA is the first university in Ghana to provide both academic and business professional education. UPSA like other business schools is nationally and internationally accredited by the National Accreditation Board (Ghana) and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) respectively. Unlike other schools, however, UPSA students will be required to complete a chartered program such as the ACCA, ICAG, CIM, CIMA, ICSA and others, by the end of their degree study to boost their employability skills upon graduation. They offer courses in diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees courses such as management, finance and accounting studies.
