For admission into programmes of study at the University of Education, Winneba UEW for any first degree or second degree, an applicant must have the following requirements for a successful admission.

UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Entry requirements for a Undergraduate degree Programme

These requirements are to be met in addition to the other programme-specific requirements
BACHELOR PROGRAMMES
1. Senior High School (SHS) Certificate Holders
  1. i.    Must have at least, six (6) WASSCE passes including three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as
  2. ii.   Three (3) Electives in relevant subjects with the total aggregate of 36 or better.
  3. iii.  Must also satisfy Special Programme requirement(s) for programme(s) chosen.
2. School Certificate/GCE Holders
  1. i. Five (5) credits at GCE “O” Level, including English Language and Mathematics as well as
  2. ii. Two (2) “A” Level passes other than General Paper in relevant subjects
3. Diploma Holders
  1. i.      Must possess a Higher National Diploma or its equivalence from previous field or area of study.
  2. ii.     Full-Time applicants may pass an interview.
DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

a.         Diploma in Basic Education

1.         WASSCE Entry Requirement
  • Applicants must have Credit pass (A1-C6) in FIVE (5) subjects, comprising THREE (3) Core Subjects including English Language and Mathematics, and TWO (2) Elective Subjects relevant to the programme chosen.
2.         SSSCE Entry Requirement
  • Applicants must have Credits (A-D) in FIVE (5) subjects, comprising THREE (3) Core Subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, and TWO (2) Elective Subjects relevant to the programme chosen.
b.      DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (COMPETENCY-BASED TRAINING)
Access to this programme shall be at the discretion of the learning environment. However, it will be beneficial if the applicant holds any of the following:
  • A University degree, Higher National Diploma or a National Certificate II on the NTVETQF.
  • City and Guilds Advanced Certificate/Part III in a trade area.
  • A minimum of three passes in Royal Society of Arts/Ghana Commercial Examinations Stage III in approved business subjects with at least two (2) years working experience.
  • A certificate from a Farm Institute with at least two (2) years working experience.
TECHNICAL PROGRAMMES
B.Sc. MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (REGULAR AND DISTANCE) Applicants must satisfy any one of the following: 1.         WASSCE HOLDERS – Applicants must have grade A1-C6 in three (3) core subjects which are English, Core mathematics and integrated science, and three elective subjects from the following: Automotive Mechanics, Elective Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Science, Chemistry, Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity,   Electronics, Metalwork, and Welding. 2.         SSSCE HOLDERS – Applicants must have Grade D or better in three core subjects which are: English Language, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science, and three (3) Electives from the following:  Automotive Mechanics, Elective Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Science, Chemistry, Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity, Electronics, Metalwork, Welding 3.         GCE ADVANCED LEVEL HOLDERS – Applicants must have at least grade D or better in three Science subjects. They must also have credit passes (grade 6) in five (5) subjects in GCE ‘O’ Level including English, Mathematics and Science. 4.         PART III HOLDERS: Applicants must be holders of a.         Motor Vehicle Technicians (MVT) Part III certificate. b.         Mechanical Engineering Technician (MET) Part III certificate All part III applicants must pass an interview 5.         HND HOLDERS: Applicants must have a Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or Agric Engineering with specialty in any one of the following options:
  • a.         Automotive Mechanics
  • b.         Plant
  • c.         Production
  • d.         Refrigeration
  • e.           Agricultural Mechanization
All HND applicants must pass an interview. 6.         MATURE APPLICANTS: Applicants who want to enter as mature candidates must not be less than twenty-five (25) years old by August of the year of enrolment and must be holders of any of the following qualifications: Motor Vehicle Technician Part II, Mechanical Technician Part II,Advanced City and Guilds Certificate in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, Teachers’ Diploma A (Technical Option), WASSCE OR SSSCE holders who do not qualify for direct, National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX) Certificate with credit passes in SIX (6) subjects comprising THREE (3) core subjects (English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science) and THREE (3) elective subjects in relevant area. Please Note the following: 1.         All mature applicants must pass an entrance examination comprising a Subject Area Test (SAT) and a General Aptitude Test (GAT) 2.         All applicants must indicate whether they are opting for REGULAR or DISTANCE Mode B.Sc. ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (REGULAR/DISTANCE) Applicants must satisfy any one of the following: 1.         WASSCE HOLDERS – Applicants must have grade A1-C6 in three (3) core subjects which are English, Core mathematics and Integrated science, and three elective subjects from the following: Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Science, Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity,   Electronics, Metalwork, Welding. 2.         SSSCE HOLDERS – Applicants must have Grade D or better in three core subjects which are: English Language, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science, and three (3) Electives from the following:  Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Science,  Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity,  Electronics,  Metalwork, Welding. 3.         GCE ADVANCED LEVEL HOLDERS – Applicants must have at least grade D or better in three Science subjects. They must also have credit passes (grade 6) in five (5) subjects in GCE ‘O’ Level including English, Mathematics and Science. 4.         PART III HOLDERS: Applicants must be holders of Electrical Engineering Technicians (EET) Part III certificate All EET Part III applicants must pass an interview 5.         HND HOLDERS: Applicants must have a Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate in Electrical/Electronics with specialty in any one of the following options: a.         Power b.         Telecommunication Successful HND applicants would be placed at Level 200. However, those with a class below 2nd Lower will be placed at level 100 6.         MATURE APPLICANTS: Applicants who want to enter as mature candidates must not be less than twenty-five (25) years old by August of the year of enrolment and must be holders of any of the following qualifications i.          Electrical Engineering Technician Part II OR ii.         Advanced City and Guilds Certificate in Electrical Engineering

They must also have credit passes (grade 6) in five (5) subjects in GCE ‘O’ Level including English, Mathematics and Science. 4.         PART III HOLDERS: Applicants must be holders of Construction Technician Part III certificate 5.         HND HOLDERS: Applicants must have a Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate in Building Construction or Civil Engineering. Successful HND applicants would be placed at Level 200. However, those with a class below 2nd Lower will be placed at level 100 6.         MATURE APPLICANTS: Applicants who want to enter as mature candidates must not be less than twenty-five (25) years old by August of the year of enrolment and must be holders of any of the following qualifications i.          Advanced City and Guilds Certificate in Block work and Concreting. ii.         Diploma in Basic Education (Colleges of Education) iii.        Teachers Certificates A (Technical Option) iv.        WASSCE OR SSSCE holders who do not qualify for direct entry but are 25 years of age. Please Note the following: 1.         All mature applicants must pass an entrance examination comprising a Subject Area Test (SAT) and a General Aptitude Test (GAT) 2.         All applicants must indicate whether they are opting for REGULAR or DISTANCE Mode B.Sc. WOOD TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (REGULAR AND DISTANCE) Applicants must satisfy any one of the following: 1.         WASSCE HOLDERS – Applicants must have grade A1-C6 in three (3) core subjects which are English, Core mathematics and Integrated science, and three elective subjects from the following: Wood work, Furniture Design, Elective Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Science, Chemistry, Technical Drawing. 2.         SSSCE HOLDERS – Applicants must have Grade D or better in three core subjects which are: English Language, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science, and three (3) Electives from the following:  Wood work, Furniture Design, Elective Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Science, Chemistry, Technical Drawing. 3.         GCE ADVANCED LEVEL HOLDERS –Applicants must have at least grade D or better in three Science subjects. They must also have credit passes (grade 6) in five (5) subjects in GCE ‘O’ Level including English, Mathematics and Science. 4.         PART III HOLDERS: Applicants must be holders of Construction Technician Part III certificate. All part III applicants must pass an interview HND HOLDERS: Applicants must have a Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate in Wood work Technology. Successful HND applicants would be placed at Level 200. Please Note the following: 1.         All mature applicants must pass an entrance examination comprising a Subject Area Test (SAT) and a General Aptitude Test (GAT) 2.         All applicants must indicate whether they are opting for REGULAR or DISTANCE Mode 4.         TVET Entry Requirements (MATURE) Applicants must have must have passed in three (3) in their respective TVET area and two core subjects (NAPTEX) including English and Mathematics. •           Mechanical Technology •           Construction Technology •           Automotive Technology •           Electrical and Electronics Technology •           Wood Technology •           Fashion Technology •           Catering and Hospitality Technology b.         Other Diploma Programmes Entry Requirement a.         WASSCE Entry Requirement b.         Six passes (A1 – D7) in all subjects, including English Language and Mathematics; and c.         Must possess a minimum of C6 in any three (3) of the passes relevant to the area of specialization. 2.         SSSCE Entry Requirement i.          Six passes (A-D) in all subjects, including English Language and Mathematics; and ii.         At least three (3) of the passes must be relevant to the area of specialization.

UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION,  POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

PHD PROGRAMMES
Applicants should possess:
  • A researched Master’s Degree in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution.
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above in the course offered at the Master’s level.
  • At least grade “B” in the dissertation presented for the Master’s degree.
  • Applicants who wish to offer Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ph.D. in Science Education must hold Research master’s degree in Mathematics Education and Science Education respectively.
PH.D. IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP-WINNEBA Applicants must possess:
  • A researched Master’s Degree (M.Phil. by Research) in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution.
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above in the courses offered at the master’s degree level.
  • At least grade ‘B’ in the dissertation presented for the Master’s degree.
  • Applicants must pass a selection interview.
    • i Include research proposal that tell us what that the candidate wants to research into, how he/she intends to do it, and why it is worth doing ( Not more than ten (10) pages of A4 sheets).
    • In addition to the detailed research proposal please include a 200 word statement of intent with your application.
    • Must pass the selection interview.
PH.D. IN MUSIC Applicants must possess:
  • A researched Master’s Degree (M.Phil. by Research) from University of Education, Winneba or any accredited university.
  • Applicants must pass a selection interview.
PH.D. IN SCIENCE Applicant must posses
  • in science Education from University of Education, Winneba or any recognised University.
  • in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science and Science related programmes from a recognized university.
  • Sc. in related sciences with research (with an education component/ postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent) from a recognized university.
  • Must pass selection interview.
PHD IN CONSTRCTION TECHNOLOGY/MANAGEMENT Candidates must meet the following requirements for admission:
  • Masters degree holders in Technology, or Technical, or any Engineering/Building discipline such as Building Technology, Architecture, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Project Management and other related areas.
  • Masters degree holders in other related areas shall be required to audit some courses.
  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview
PHD ANIMAL SCIENCE Entry requirement for admission of students:
  • Admission to the PhD programmes will require a relevant masters’ degree (M.Phil.) from an accredited University. An M.Sc. degree with research in the relevant field will also be considered for admission. Areas of specialization include:
    • Non-Ruminant Nutrition
    • Ruminant Nutrition
    • Animal Production and Management
    • Animal Breeding & Genetics
    • Animal Reproductive Physiology
  • Candidates are required to pass an interview before being admitted.
PHD CROP/SOIL SCIENCE Entry requirements for admission:
  • Admission to the PhD programmes will require a relevant masters’ degree (MPhil) from an accredited University.  An MSc degree with research in the relevant field will also be considered for admission.  Areas of specialization include:
    • Agronomy/Crop Physiology
    • Entomology
    • Plant Pathology
    • Plant Breeding
    • Soil Fertility and Nutrition
    • Soil and Water Conservation
  • Candidates are required to pass an interview before being admitted.
MPHIL PROGRAMMES
M.PHIL ECONOMICS Applicants must:
  • Possess a good first degree (at least 2ndClass Lower Division) in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or related programme of study at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities.
  • Pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL ENGLISH EDUCATION. Applicant must:
  • Possess a good first degree with a minimum of second class (lower division) is required from candidates who have obtained B.A. or B.Ed (English).
  • Candidates must provide supporting documents such as certificates, academic transcripts, project work/thesis and two (2) referees’ reports.
  • Applicants must attend and pass a selection interview.
PHIL. TEACHINNG ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Applicant must:
  • Possess a good first degree with a minimum of second class (lower division) in any language.
  • Applicant must be an English teacher in addition to (i) above.
  • Applicants must attend and pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT Applicants must:
  • Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education or other Universities recognized by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana.
  • Candidates with good honours (2nd class lower or better) degree in other disciplines other than education are required to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.
  • Applicants must pass a selection interview.

PHIL. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP   (FULL-TIME)  –  KUMASI Admission Requirements:
  • Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s Degree (Second Class, lower division or better) from any recognized University in a relevant field of study;
  • Candidates must pass a selection interview.
NB: In addition to the above stated requirements, applicants should possess a B.Ed. Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) as a pre- requisite for admission. M.PHIL EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Applicants must:
  • Possess a good first degree, (at least 2ndClass Lower) in Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, Special Education, Guidance and Counselling from the University of Education, Winneba or a recognized university.
  • Be computer literate.
NB: In addition to the above stated requirements, applicants should have qualification in Educational Studies (Diploma in Education or better).
  • Applicant must pass a selection interview.
MPHIL. BASIC EDUCATION. Applicant must:
  • Possess a Bachelor degree (not below second class lower division) in Basic Education from UEW or recognized university.
  • Former UEW products who in addition to their diploma in Basic Education have a good Bachelor’s degree (not below second class lower division) in Humanities or the sciences.
  • Candidates must pass a selection interview.
PHIL. SPECIAL EDUCATION Applicant must:
  • Possess a Bachelor degree (not below second class lower division) in the relevant discipline.
  • A professional qualification (also in relevant subject/discipline) approved by the academic Board as being equivalent to a good Bachelor’s degree.
  • An academic transcript shall be required for the admission.
  • Candidates must pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL CHEMISTRY EDUCATION-WINNEBA Applicants should possess:
  • A good first degree in Chemistry from the University of Education, Winneba.
  • A good first degree in Chemistry (with and education component) from a recognized university.
  • A good first degree in Chemistry from a recognized university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
  • Former UEW products with Diploma in Science Education in addition to BSc in Chemistry from recognized university are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must pass the selection interview.
M.PHIL. SCIENCE EDUCATION Applicants should possess:
  • A good first degree in the Sciences with an Education  component from a recognised University
  • A good first degree in the Sciences from a recognised University and a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent
  • A good first degree in the Sciences from recognised universities and Diploma in Science Education from UEW.
M.PHIL GEOGRAPHY Applicants should:
  • Possess Second class lower or better in Geography or any related discipline.
  • Pass the selection interview.
PHIL ART EDUCATION Applicants should possess:
  • A good first degree in relevant discipline ( Studio Art, Art Education, Design, or  Art History) from recognized tertiary institution
  • A minimum of second class lower.
  • A minimum average of “B” in M.A. Art Education programme.
M.PHIL ANIMAL SCIENCE Entry requirement for admission of students:
  • For admission to the M Phil programme candidates should possess a B.Sc. or B.Ed. degree in Agriculture with a first or second class.  A B.Sc. degree in a field related to agriculture (e.g. biology, biochemistry and microbiology) may be accepted if this degree is deemed relevant to the student’s chosen area of specialization.  Areas of Specialization include:
    • Non-Ruminant Nutrition
    • Ruminant Nutrition
    • Animal Production and Management
    • Animal Breeding & Genetics

  • Possess a good first degree (at least 2ndclass lower) in Chemistry from a recognized University.
  • Possess CGPA of 3.0 or better from the University of Education or recognized university.
  • Pass a selection interview.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES
  • Applicant must possess a minimum CGPA of 3.0 or better at the Masters Level in Communication and Media Studies.
  • The programme is a 1-Year Top-Up programme.
M.PHIL POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION
  • Candidates applying for the programme should have Political Science major (First Degree) or combined Political Science with another subject, and must have attained at least a 2ndClass Lower Division.
  • Candidates with M.Ed Political Science from a recognized University can also apply for a 1-year top-up programme in Political Science Education.
  • Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.
M.PHIL SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy programme in Social Studies Education:
  • A good Bachelor’s degree (i.e 2.2 or better) in Social Studies or relevant field of study (Geography, Economics, History, Political Science, Development Studies, etc) from a recognized university.
  • Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.
MASTER OF PHILOSPHY (MPHIL.)ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME Applicant must:
  • Possess B.Sc., B.Ed, B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Technology/Engineering  or comparable degrees with at least Second Class (Lower Division)
  • Pass the selection interview
  • Submit a statement of research interest.
MASTER OF PHILOSPHY (MPHIL.)IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME Applicant must:
  • Possess B.Sc., B.Ed, B.Tech in Mechanical Technology/Engineering  or comparable degrees with at least Second Class (Lower Division)
  • Pass the selection interview
  • Submit a statement of research interest.
MASTER OF PHILOSPHY (MPHIL.) IN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME Applicant must:
  • Possess B.Sc., B.Ed, B.Tech in Automotive Technology/Engineering  or comparable degrees with at least Second Class (Lower Division)

OTHER M. PHIL PROGRAMMES Applicants should possess:
  • A good Bachelor’s Degree with Education component (eg. B.Ed), from the University of Education (UEW) or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study,

  • A good Bachelor’s Degree  without Education e.g. (B.A, BSc) from an accredited university
  • Ed. or equivalent qualifications with relevant course content. Such applicant may be required to do the M Phil programme within one year.
  • Applicants with good first degrees from any field of study can apply for Communication and Media Studies programmes.
  • Applicants for the M.Phil./Ph.D.programmes should submit a proposal  defining the specific area of interest, brief description of any previous study conducted on the subject and justification for the study.( Not more than four pages)
MBA PROGRAMMES
MBA (ACCOUNTING) AND MBA (FINANCE) Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
  • Hold a second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Finance, Accounting, Economics, and other business related subjects.  Applications may also be considered from graduates in non-business areas with strong quantitative backgrounds.
  • Be a professionally qualified accountant and a member of one of the Accountancy bodies constituting the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
  • Have at least one year’s relevant experience in the private or public sector
  • Pass a selection interview.
MBA (MARKETING) AND MBA (HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR) Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2ndClass Lower Division in any field of study from a recognised institution.
  • Pass a selection interview
  • In exceptional cases, applicants with 3rdClass Division who are already employed in HR and Marketing related fields and demonstrate capacity to cope with the programme may be considered for admission.  Such applicants must write and pass a selection examination and an interview.
MTECH PROGRAMMES
MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (M.TECH.) A candidate must meet the following requirements for admission:
  • A good Bachelor’s Degree in Technology, Technical, Vocational Education or Engineering

MSC PROGRAMME
MSC IN ENVIRONMNTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION Applicants must:
  • Possess a good first degree (at least 2ndclass lower) in Environmental Health and Sanitation Education or a related field e.g. Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Public Health etc.
  • Third Class applicants with considerable work experience in the relevant area   and must pass a selection interview.
MA PROGRAMME
MASTER OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES
  • The entry requirements for the M.A. in Communication and Media Studies is a
  • good bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2ndClass Lower Division.
  • Applicants with preference for the Communication Skills option must have abackground in Language Study; preferably the English Language Programme at the bachelor’s level.
  • Applicants who obtain a CGPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.

  •  Possess a good first degree in any discipline from a recognized institution
  • Be a Member of recognized Professional Institution, like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbour, Armed Forces, Health Services and the Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies without first degree but have five or more years working experience.
