This article contains information on how to gain access to the Karatina University, KARU ODEL (Open & Distance e-Learning) Portal (https://e-learning.karu.ac.ke) also known as E-Learning Management System (LMS).
The Karatina University, KARU ODEL (Open & Distance e-Learning) seeks to improve learning processes for its student. Therefore, it is pleased to announce the adoption of a Learning Management System (LMS), that would make it easy for students to attend classes online, get lecture notes and submit assignments anywhere and anytime.
This E-learning platform is to helps lecturers of the Karatina University, KARU ODEL (Open & Distance e-Learning) in uploading their courses and course materials (ie. course outlines, lecture notes/PowerPoint presentations, recommended reading books/journals, videos, forums) on the E-learning platform to enable students to access them for continuing academic work. A series of short video tutorials will be made available in the coming days to further help our lecturers in uploading their courses.
STEPS ON HOW TO ACCESS AND ENROL FOR THE KARATINA UNIVERSITY E-LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.
- To Access the Karatina University Virtual Learning Environment go on the website and click on E-Learning or use the link – http://e-learning.karu.ac.ke
- But before you log in, you have to first sign up by using the following link: http://e-learning.karu.ac.ke/lms/login/signup.php?
- You will need to fill in 6 data points as follows:
- Username, for example jmurumba
- Password (Must be unique) – write it down
- Your Email address
- First Name
- Surname
- Student Registration Number (In Capital Letters – B001/0001G/20)
Confirm all the details before moving to the next step (Create my new account)
Final Step in Signing Up
- After you have confirmed all your details,
- Click on Create My New Account button then wait for your account to be activated. (About 2hrs during working days/hours)
- After your account has been activated use the link http://elearning.karu.ac.ke/lms/login/index.php to sign up

2. ODeL Signing in and User Interface
Signing in - After you have signed up, you now need to sign in using the following
URL: http://e-learning.karu.ac.ke/lms/login/index.php - When you click or open the above link the window below will appear.
Fill in the two data points highlighted- Your Username
- Your Password
- Log in
- After login in, your dashboard will appear.
Forgotten your Password?
- To reset your password, submit your username or your email address. If we can find you in the database, an email will be sent to your email address, with instructions how to get access again.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
In cases where students do not have access to any device or data, other options are being explored, including the possibility of using the Post Office to deliver paper-based material to students. Additional support will be made available for students when contact teaching resumes, and particularly for students who will have had difficulty in transitioning to online learning.
Students who have queries related to the academic programme should contact their respective schools. Students who do not have access to adequate mobile computing devices and cannot secure them elsewhere should contact their Faculty representatives.
