This article contains information on the list of all the accredited institutions in Kenya and how to know them. It also gives the reason why you shouldn’t attend unaccredited institutions.
Accreditation is a mode of certification in which an independent body will verify if a school or academic program meets minimum academic standards. It ensures that the academic credential a student works diligently to acquire means something tangible and that it will be recognized as such by employers and other further institutions. Given the time and monetary cost of a college education, prospective students must ensure their chosen school and/or program is accredited.
Accreditation in Kenya simply means public acceptance and confirmation proven by the award of a Charter, which a university meets and continues to meet the standards of academic excellence set by the Commission.
For any institution to gain accreditation, the Commission must be satisfied that the institution concerned has proper and sufficient physical, human, library and financial resources, viable relevant academic programmes and sound structure of governance.

ACCREDITATION PROCESS FOR INSTITUTIONS IN KENYA
The Kenya National Qualifications Authority is regulated through mechanisms intended to ensure compliance with the arrangements and requirements laid down for the qualifications system and to ensure that the system delivers qualifications of an acceptable quality.
First Stage :
The institution shall get advice and documentation from the Kenya National Qualifications Authority and undertake a self-assessment against the criteria provided; The institution shall submit this, in the appropriate format and along with supporting evidence, to the Kenya National Qualifications Authority.
Second Stage:
The Kenya National Qualifications Authority shall appoint and brief an expert panel to validate the application for accreditation; The panel shall consist of one or more experts from the Authority, together with one or more sector or subject experts appointed for this purpose by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority Board.
The expert panel shall evaluate the self-assessment report provided by the applicant institution; visit the applicant institution; complete a report and makes recommendations; submit the report to KNQA and copy it to the institution.
Third Stage:
The Kenya National Qualifications Authority shall conclude on the panel’s recommendations and inform the applicant institution.
Fourth Stage:
The Kenya National Qualifications Authority shall publish and gazette the accredited Institution, and provide the necessary documentation confirming the institution’s status as an accredited qualification awarding and/or assessment institution.
IMPORTANCE OF ACCREDITATION
- Accreditation shows that the educational institution renders a quality education by meeting specific academic standards. These standards typically revolve around the school’s ability to provide academic support to its students, the rate in which students are expected to progress, how well students are prepared upon graduation, faculty quality and curriculum requirements.
- Accreditation ensures that all colleges in that particular region or area that obtain accreditation can compete against each other on a level playing field.
- By attending an accredited school or program, a student knows that they will obtain a certain level of knowledge and training.
- Accreditation also increases the likelihood that another school or employer will recognize the academic credential the students have worked diligently to acquire. Without accreditation, there is no way for an employer, government agency or another school to know that the student did not just buy a college degree from a degree mill over the weekend.
WHY YOU SHOULDN’T ATTEND A NON-ACCREDITED INSTITUTION
The consequences of going to a non-accredited institution will be based on the exact reason the student enrols in a course or program. But generally, if a student attends a school that is not accredited, they will miss out on certain advantages and face the possibility of graduating with a degree, diploma or certificate that is practically worthless beyond any personal satisfaction the student may garner from the accomplishment.
