ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The principal undergraduate programme for aspiring registered nurses at DUT is the Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing Science. The CAO code for this programme is DUIBN1. It is based at the Indumiso Site, Midlands Campus, Pietermaritzburg.

To be eligible, applicants must have completed the National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Higher Education (HE) endorsement. The following subjects are compulsory:

  • Life Sciences — provides the biological foundation for understanding human anatomy, physiology, and disease.
  • Mathematics — required due to the quantitative nature of nursing science, including medication dosage calculations and data interpretation. Note: Mathematical Literacy is not accepted as a substitute. Applicants who completed Mathematical Literacy should contact the university directly to confirm eligibility.

The minimum Admission Point Score (APS) is not fixed in publicly available sources and may be updated. Applicants must consult the official CAO Handbook 2026 Entry for the current APS threshold.

Important: Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission. The selection process includes two additional compulsory stages — the SATAP test and a personal interview — described in the section below.

  • Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing Science
  • BTech: Nursing (Primary Health Care)
  • BTech: Nursing (Nursing Management)
  • MTech: Nursing
  • DTech: Nursing

DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, DUT NURSING APPLICATION GUIDELINES AND FORMS

All undergraduate applications, including the Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing Science, must be submitted exclusively through the Central Applications Office (CAO) portal. Applicants cannot apply directly through the DUT website for this programme. The CAO is the only legitimate gateway for processing undergraduate applications.

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official CAO portal at https://www.cao.ac.za/ and create a user account using a valid, active email address. This email will be used for all communication, including SATAP and interview notifications.
  2. Log in and go to the course selection section. Search for Durban University of Technology and select the programme Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing Science using the CAO code DUIBN1. Using the correct code is essential — selecting the wrong programme or code will result in processing errors.
  3. Fill in all personal and academic details accurately. Any discrepancy between the information provided and your supporting documents may cause delays or rejection.
  4. Upload all required supporting documents. These typically include:
    • Certified copy of your NSC final mark sheet
    • Certified copy of your Identity Document
    • Proof of residence
    • Any other documents listed in the CAO Handbook 2026 Entry
  5. Pay the non-refundable application fee online via the CAO portal. The exact fee amount is detailed in the CAO Handbook 2026 Entry. Save your proof of payment.
  6. Review your full application, then click the final submit button. Once submitted and paid, the application cannot be edited. Keep a record of your unique application number.

After submission, log back into your CAO account regularly to check your application status. Shortlisted applicants will be notified of the SATAP test and interview stages through their registered email address and the CAO portal.

SATAP and Interview Selection Stages

Shortlisted applicants are required to write the Standardized Assessment Test for Access and Placement (SATAP). This is a mandatory test administered by DUT to measure critical thinking, literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills. It evaluates general aptitude rather than NSC subject content.

Following the SATAP, a further shortlisted group will be invited for a personal interview with the Department of Nursing admissions panel. The interview assesses communication skills, motivation, empathy, and overall suitability for the nursing profession. Final selection is based on a combination of the applicant’s academic record, SATAP performance, and interview outcome.

Applicants should monitor their registered email and CAO portal account closely for scheduling information regarding both stages.
