“Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme: Empowering South African Students in Engineering and Built Environmental Fields.”

The Western Cape Government’s Masakh’iSizwe (MiS) Bursary Programme is providing an exceptional opportunity for South African citizens to advance their education and construct a prosperous future. Founded in 2006, the program aims to foster the next generation of professionals in engineering and built environmental fields by awarding external bursaries for studies in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Western Cape Province (WCP).

The Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme serves as a response to the urgent need for professionals in scarce and critical disciplines. It offers full-time bursaries for degrees or diplomas related to transport, engineering, and the built environment, along with other disciplines deemed scarce and critical by the Department of Infrastructure.

Who Can Apply for the Bursary?

All South African citizens accepted or intending to study at a Higher Education Institution in the Western Cape are eligible to apply. Preference will be given, but not limited to:

  • Persons with disabilities
  • Financially disadvantaged individuals
  • Female students
  • Applicants from the Western Cape

The bursaries are offered on a work-back basis, meaning recipients are required to work in the public service and/or partnered companies for one year for every year they received a bursary. Furthermore, during their studies, there will be weekends when the students are required to fulfill certain obligations.

The bursary covers:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation and meals (or transport costs)
  • All prescribed books and materials
  • Support programmes

The bursary recipients have the opportunity to study at renowned institutions, including:

  • University of Cape Town
  • Cape Peninsula University of Technology
  • Stellenbosch University

Key Dates

The closing date for applications is 31 August every year. It is advisable to submit your application as early as possible to ensure it’s given ample consideration.
