We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024 UCT International & Refugee Scholarships for Postgraduate Students is now open.

UCT International & Refugee Scholarships
“UCT 2024 International & Refugee Postgraduate Scholarships: Opportunities, eligibility, and key dates for aspirants.”

The University of Cape Town (UCT) offers a limited number of scholarships annually to international and refugee students for postgraduate study across all disciplines. These scholarships are competitive, and senior candidates are given preference.

Benefits:

  • Scholarships contribute towards the Cost of Attendance.
  • Scholarship values:
    • Honours – R25,000
    • Master’s – R30,000
    • Doctoral – R35,000
  • Renewable based on satisfactory progress:
    • Honours: 1 year
    • Master’s: 2 years
    • Doctoral: 3 years

Eligibility:

  1. Nationality: Must have an International or Refugee status with valid documentation.
  2. Employment: Not employed full-time (working more than 20 hours a week).
  3. Admission: Must apply to UCT admissions. Those denied or who’ve withdrawn their UCT application aren’t eligible.
  4. Tenure: Over the degree tenure applicants aren’t considered:
    • Honours: 1 year
    • Master’s: 2 years
    • Doctoral: 3 years
  5. Qualifications: No funding for a 2nd degree at the same or lower level.
  6. Degree choice restrictions:
    • Undergraduate degrees (e.g. LLB, MBChB, BArch).
    • Postgraduate Diplomas, Certificates, and HDE.
    • Honours in the EAFM program.
    • Master’s in MMed or MBA.
    • Any part-time degree or degree with less than 33% research components.

Application Procedure:

  1. Apply for full-time admission through the UCT admissions or faculty office.
  2. Complete and submit the scholarship application form.
  3. Attach necessary documentation:
    • Passport/Refugee papers.
    • Certified official transcripts and, if necessary, translated copies.
    • 1-page abstract for Master’s or Doctoral applicants.
    • 2 Academic Referee reports.
    • CV.
    • Section E for Master’s by Research or Doctoral applicants with prospective/established supervisors. Download Section E here.
  4. Return the completed application and required documentation as ONE PDF via email with the subject line: “International & Refugee Application – Your full name” to: pgfunding@uct.ac.za.

Application Dates:

  • Closing Date: August 31, 2023 (preceding the year of study).

Note: The applicant’s country of origin doesn’t affect scholarship awarding. However, proof of refugee status is mandatory.
