Distance Learning Courses Offered at Jomo Kenyatta University, JKUAT: 2020/2021

Following the confirmation of several cases of the global pandemic in Kenya, the President of the Republic of Kenya has directed that learning in all educational institutions be suspended with immediate effect. These include a ban on international travel, limitations on domestic travel, advice against gatherings of more than 100 people and controls on entry points. This, in turn, has affected the gathering of students in classes nationwide.

As a measure to combat the spread of this contagious virus, universities across Kenya including Gretsa University have now been forced to suspend classes indefinitely and move the term’s recess to an earlier date. Students are advised to take precautionary measures to avoid contracting this virus.

Therefore, we have compiled the latest updates on the Gretsa University (PU) closure and opening dates:

LATEST UPDATES FROM THE GRETSA UNIVERSITY OPENING AND CLOSING DATES

To prevent further loss of learning time occasioned by the closure of universities to curb coronavirus spread, the University Senate met on Tuesday 28 April 2020 and resolved that the earlier suspended January-Apri l 2020 Semester learning for on-campus face-to-face fulltime as well as ODL students resume through interactive virtual classes/online learning effective TILL Friday 15 May 2020 for all students who were in session then, so as to complete the semester learning requirements.

In addition, learning for the May-August 2020 Semester for all self-sponsored new and continuing students (Fulltime and ODL) as well as Government Sponsored Students (KCSE 2016,2017 and 2018) currently on a long holiday and other continuing categories of Government Sponsored Students will commence on Monday 18 May 2020, initially through the interactive virtual classes/online learning and later on through applicable on-campus face-to-face classes and tutorials in case the pandemic is contained and the Government allows for reopening of universities before the ·lapse of the semester. Please find the course registration forms arid brochures for academic programmes courses and applicable fees on the University website www.gretsauniversity.ac.ke under the academic school’s sections.  ODL students should get in touch with the ODL Office on delivery of study modules upon registration.

The virtual classes will be offered through the interactive audio and/or video KENET Big Blue Button web-conferencing as well as Moodie platforms. Applicable access links shall be conveyed to registered students’ phone numbers through  SMS  or  WhatsApp by the respective course lecturers. Use your smartphone or laptop to access the virtual classes. The medical fee has been waived to enable students to procure data bundles for digital learning. Teaching timetables are on the University website academic schools’ sections.

End of Semester Examinations and Sit-in CATS for the two semesters shall be administered on­ campus after the Government allows for the re-opening of universities on dates to be communicated then. However, assignments and quizzes constituting part of the course work will be administered virtually to students who will have cleared the requisite semester fees.
