We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024 Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) Internship Programme is now open.
The SCIS, an interdisciplinary research center within the Faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management at Wits University, focuses on understanding and combating inequality in the global South. With a commitment to fostering a nuanced understanding of inequality, the SCIS has launched its 2024 Internship Programme aimed at graduate students at Wits University.
SCIS Internship Eligibility
To be considered for one of these prestigious positions, applicants must:
- Be registered for a postgraduate qualification at Wits University.
- Have a background in Economics, Climate Change, or a related area.
- Possess knowledge and experience of research skills (quantitative and qualitative) and demonstrate an interest in supporting research in an academic or policy context.
How to Apply
Successful internship applicants will be involved in assisting with research, event coordination, and various aspects of project and operations management. Prospective interns should apply through the SCIS Application Portal. They are expected to be adaptable, innovative, and proactive, with the capacity to work collaboratively within a diverse team environment.
For 2024, internship opportunities are available in three key projects:
- Climate Change and Inequality
- Future Of Work
- Wealth Inequality and Elites
Interns are expected to be highly motivated, able to work with limited supervision, and engage with different stakeholders.

Additional Information
SCIS internships are paid, part-time positions that are in line with the university’s rules. These posts are for fixed-term, 6-month internships for 1½ days a week, which may be renewed subject to performance and availability of funding.
