We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024 CSIR Bursary Programme is now open.

“2024 CSIR Bursary Programme: Empowering South Africa’s Future in Science, Engineering, and Technology”

The Department of Research Administration and Development at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is excited to invite both undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for the CSIR Bursary Programme for the 2024 academic year.

The CSIR Bursary Programme is designed to financially assist full-time, unemployed students in obtaining qualifications in areas that CSIR has identified as priorities. This is an excellent opportunity to further your education and start a career in science, engineering, or technology.

The CSIR Bursary Programme offers a comprehensive bursary that covers all the costs associated with university studies such as:

In addition to the financial support, bursary recipients will also receive full wrap-around support and opportunities for vacation work.

Eligibility Criteria

The CSIR Bursary Programme is open to academically qualifying students with a special focus on attracting and increasing the participation of women and black people in science, engineering, and technology.

Undergraduate – Honours Bursary

Areas of study include Data Science and Mechanical Engineering. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens
  • Intend to enroll full-time for their chosen degree at a South African public university
  • Achieve at least Level 5 in English and Level 6 in Mathematics and Physical Science

Masters – Doctoral Bursary

The list of areas for Masters and Doctoral Bursary is exhaustive and includes disciplines like Applied Mathematics, Agricultural Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Veterinary Science, and many more.

For a Masters and Doctoral bursary, applicants should be South African citizens who possess:

  • Good scientific writing skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent academic record
  • A drive to conduct research, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and within a team
  • Excellent technical abilities
  • The ability to work well under pressure and meet scheduled deliverables
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and writing

Application Procedure

To apply for the CSIR Bursary Programme:

  1. Visit the CSIR application portal
  2. Follow the on-site instructions to complete your application

Your application must be accompanied by:

  • An updated CV
  • A copy of your certified identity document
  • A copy of your latest academic record
  • For Masters and Doctoral applicants, proof of degree already completed

Please note that failure to attach these documents will render your application null and void.

Application Dates

Applications for the 2024 academic year are now open and will close on Sunday, 20th August 2023.

Academic merit will be considered during the selection process, with a focus on increasing the participation of women and black people in science, engineering, and technology.

Successful applicants are obliged to work for CSIR for every year funded by the bursary.
