We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024 De Beers Bursary Program is now open.
Founded 130 years ago by Cecil John Rhodes and later acquired by Earnest Oppenheimer, De Beers has carved a niche in diamond exploration, mining, trading, and manufacturing. Today, this global leader operates across 35 countries with mining activities in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Canada. Through its bursary program, De Beers is reaching out to ambitious students keen to join the diamond mining industry.
De Beers Bursary Program Eligibility
Areas of Study:
Candidates interested in the bursary should aim to pursue studies in:
- Mining Engineering
- Mine Survey
- Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Engineering Geology (specializing in Rock Engineering/Geotechnical Engineering)
- Metallurgical Engineering
Requirements:
To be considered, applicants should:
- Be a South African citizen
- Enroll in full-time undergraduate studies at an accredited South African institution
- Achieve Grade 12 with exemption
- Secure a minimum of 70% in Mathematics and Science Higher Grade and 60% in English
- Possess written proof of acceptance from a South African mainstream university or university of technology
- Reside in areas surrounding where the mine operates
- Provide certified copies of their SA ID and full academic record
Application Procedure
The De Beers Bursary covers:
- Full Tuition
- Books
- Accommodation and meals
- Laptop allowance
- Student allowance
Successful bursary recipients studying a national diploma will receive practical training annually. Those in mainstream universities will be offered vacation work.

Upon submission, applicants will receive a confirmation email and be redirected to the login page.
Application Dates
Bursary applications open in June each year and the deadline for submission is October 31st, 2023. If you haven’t received feedback by the year’s end, it indicates the application wasn’t successful.
