SANBI’s Division: Adaptation Policy and Resourcing, in partnership with the African Climate & Development Institute (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town, is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship to support research on the resilience of ecosystems services in response to climate change. SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship Benefits

  • The fellowship offers a value of R350,000 per year and is available until November 30, 2024. Additionally, running expenses will be provided each year.

SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship Research Areas

The research will focus on four main avenues:

  1. Assess existing South African research and project experience on the impacts of EbA interventions on the resilience of the flow of ecosystem services
  2. Identify knowledge gaps relating to EbA impacts on the resilience of ecosystem service flows to climate changes
  3. Develop research protocols to research key gaps identified
  4. Use biome-level systems dynamic model /causal loop diagrams to predict impacts of EbA interventions on key ecosystem services under scenarios of climate change

SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship Eligibility

  • Completed a PhD in the last five years, or will be awarded a PhD by mid-2023
  • Strong ecological background, preferably with experience in African biomes
  • Independent and proactive, with a peer-reviewed publication track record appropriate for the applicant’s career stage
  • Comfortable working with climate change projections
  • Proficiency in R, Python, CDO, and/or Google Earth Engine (preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research, synthesize literature, and formulate defendable recommendations
  • Comfortable and confident in interacting with key stakeholders, including EbA practitioners, government, academia, and civil society in South Africa

  4. Provide two letters of reference (one from an academic supervisor)
  5. Include examples of published work
