SASSA Child Support Grant: Who Qualifies?

As we all know, SASSA stands for the South African Social Security Agency, the government institution responsible for administering social grants to vulnerable citizens, including children, older persons, and persons with disabilities. SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANT AMOUNT FOR 2026
The official Child Support Grant amount for the 2026/2027 financial year is R580 per child per month.
Children classified as orphans and meeting the additional requirements may qualify for an extra R290 top-up payment, bringing the total monthly support to R870 per child.
The Foster Child Grant is separate from the Child Support Grant and increased to R1,290 per month from April 2026, with a further increase to R1,300 from October 2026.
WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANT?
Below are the updated qualifying criteria for the Child Support Grant in 2026:
- The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee residing in South Africa.
- The applicant must be the primary caregiver of the child concerned. This may include:
- Biological parents
- Grandparents
- Legal guardians
- Older siblings above 16 years heading child-headed households
- Both the applicant and the child must reside permanently in South Africa.
- The child must be below the age of 18 years.
- The child must not be cared for in a state-funded institution.
- The applicant and spouse (if married) must comply with the SASSA means test.
- The caregiver cannot apply for more than six non-biological children.
- The caregiver must not already be receiving another social grant for the same child.
SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANT MEANS TEST FOR 2026
To qualify financially for the Child Support Grant in 2026, applicants must fall within the approved income threshold.
- Single applicants: Monthly income must not exceed approximately R5,800.
- Married applicants: Combined household income must not exceed approximately R11,600 per month.
Applicants are advised to confirm the latest thresholds directly with SASSA, as updates may occasionally differ across government communication platforms.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO APPLY FOR THE CHILD SUPPORT GRANT
Applicants are required to submit supporting documents when applying for the grant. These include:
- South African ID document, refugee permit, or permanent residence permit.
- The child’s birth certificate.
- Proof of income or unemployment status.
- Proof of marital status where applicable.
- Proof of residence.
If the applicant is not the biological parent of the child, one of the following may also be required:
- An affidavit from the police.
- A social worker’s report.
- An affidavit from the biological parent.
- A letter from the child’s school principal.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANT IN 2026
The Child Support Grant application is completely free.
Applicants should visit the nearest SASSA office and complete the application process in person. After submission, SASSA will issue a receipt as proof of application.
Applications may take up to three months to be processed. If approved, payments are usually backdated to the original application date.
