This article contains information on the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) application form and requirements for admission into the following programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year.

Applications to study for the listed postgraduate programmes above in 2026/2027 are now open for both internal and external applications. Internal applicants are students currently registered at SPU for the 2026/2027 academic year. External applicants refer to any graduate who meets the requirements for the qualification.

SOL PLAATJE UNIVERSITY, SPU POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Master’s Degrees

  • For Master’s full-time students, the minimum period of study is one year and the maximum period is four years. For Master’s part-time students, the minimum period is two years and the maximum is five years.
  • For a Master of Medicine, only full-time study is permissible. For more details on period of registration for the Master’s programme, see the Postgraduate Prospectus (link provided above).

Doctoral Degrees

  • For Doctoral full-time students, the minimum period of registration is two years and the maximum period is five years.
  • For Doctoral part-time students, the minimum period of registration is three years and the maximum period is seven years.

All postgraduate applications for study at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) for 2026/2027 are submitted fully online and are free of charge — SPU does not charge an application fee for postgraduate applications.

  • Visit the official SPU website at https://www.spu.ac.za and click on the “Apply Now” link on the homepage.
  • Complete the online application form in full.
  • Upload all required supporting documents.
  • Submit your application before the closing date.

APPLICATION WINDOW AND CLOSING DATES FOR 2026/2027

  • 2027 Intake — Applications Open: April 2026
  • 2027 Intake — Closing Date: 30 November 2026
  • 2026 Intake (Previous Cycle): Extended deadline was 15 January 2026 (now closed)

Please note: Late applications are generally not accepted unless space is available. It is strongly advised to apply before the closing date.

SPU POSTGRADUATE APPLICATION FEE

Sol Plaatje University does not charge an application fee for postgraduate applications. The application process is completely free.

TUITION FEES

Estimated annual tuition fees for 2026 range between R15,000 and R35,000, depending on the faculty and programme. For detailed fee schedules per programme, refer to the official SPU Postgraduate Prospectus.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR SPU POSTGRADUATE APPLICATION

All applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Certified copy of ID or Passport
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Proof of residence (e.g., municipal bill not older than 3 months)
  • A research proposal or proposed title of dissertation/thesis (for Masters and PhD applicants)

International applicants must also provide:

  • Valid study permit
  • Proof of English language proficiency (if applicable)
  • SAQA evaluation of foreign qualifications

UPDATING YOUR APPLICATION

You need to submit additional documents to the Admissions Office. This may include the following:

  • Certified paper copies of documents uploaded online as part of your application
  • Academic transcripts, which may not have been available at the time of your application, must be uploaded to the student system.
  • Where applicable, evidence of English language proficiency must be provided.
