This article contains information on the University of Stellenbosch, SU Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Application form and the requirements for admission into Postgraduate programmes for the 2024 academic year.

Applications to study for Postgraduate Certificate in Education in 2024 are now open for both internal and external applications. INTERNAL APPLICANTS are students currently registered at SU for the 2024 academic year. EXTERNAL APPLICANTS refer to any graduate who meets the requirements for the qualification.

UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH, SU PGCE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The minimum entry requirement is an approved Bachelor degree (e.g. BA, BSc, BCom) from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning that includes sufficient disciplinary learning in appropriate academic fields to enable the development of teaching subjects in FET.  n particular, the candidate should have majored in one or two appropriate courses or modules for his/her degree to enable him/her to pursue a specific teaching specialization (subject) (that is, University studies at NQF level 7 at least in appropriate disciplines).

1. Mathematics and Sciences

Candidates may specialize in teaching one or two of the following school subjects; Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences,  and/or  Agricultural Sciences.

In this case, a candidate must have majored in the disciplinary subject for undergraduate studies. One disciplinary subject must have been done up to third level (NQF Level 7) and the other subject at least up to second level (NQF Level 6). Recognized disciplinary subjects for each teaching subject are as outlined below

  • Mathematics: A candidate must have done Mathematics or Applied Mathematics up to third level (NQF Level 7) or at least upto second level (NQF Level 6).
  • Physical Sciences:  A candidate must have done both Physics and Chemistry, off which one up to third level (NQF Level 7) and the other one at least up to second level (NQF Level6).
  • Life Sciences: A candidate must have done both Zoology and Botany, one up to third level (NQF Level 7) and the other one at least up to second level (NQF Level 6). If both were done up to second level, then in addition one of the following should have been done up to third level; Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, or Biological Sciences
  • Agricultural Sciences: A candidate must have done all the fields of agriculture; Plant Production, Animal Production, Soil Science and Agricultural Economics at least upto second level (NQF Level 6) and specialized with any one of the fields up to third level (NQF Level 7).
2. Economic and Management Science

Candidates may specialize in teaching one or two of the following school subjects; Accounting, Economics or Business studies. n this case, a candidate must have majored in the disciplinary subject for undergraduate studies. One disciplinary subject must have been done up to third level (NQF Level 7) and the other subject at least up to second level (NQF Level 6). Recognized disciplinary subjects are Accounting, Economics and Business Management.

3. Languages and Social Sciences:

Candidates may specialize in teaching one or two of the following school subjects; English, Sepedi, Tshivenda or Xitsonga and History or Geography. In this case, a candidate must have majored in the disciplinary subject for undergraduate studies. One disciplinary subject must have been done up to third level (NQF Level 7) and the other subject at least up to second level (NQF Level 6). Recognized disciplinary subjects are *English / Sepedi / Tshivenda / Xitsonga Language and Literature, History and Geography (#Climatology, GIS, Geomorphology, and Settlement Geography).

4. Languages and Life Orientation: 

Candidates may specialize in teaching one or two of the following school subjects; English, Sepedi, Tshivenda, Xitsonga and Life Orientation. n this case, a candidate must have majored in the disciplinary subject for undergraduate studies. One disciplinary subject must have been done up to third level (NQF Level 7) and the other subject at least up to second level (NQF Level 6). Recognized disciplinary subjects for each teaching subject are as below:

  • Languages: A candidate must have done *English, Sepedi, Tshivenda and/or Xitsonga Language and Literature up to third level (NQF Level 7) or at least up to second level (NQF Level 6).
  • Life  Orientation:   A candidate must have done Psychology  and  one  of  the  following  fields;  Sociology, Philosophy, Political Science, Human Movement Sciences, Labour Studies or industrial Studies. If Psychology is done up to second level (NQF Level 6) then the other field must have been done upto third level (NQF Level 7) or vice versa.

*The following are acceptable for specializing in English teaching, provided English is included in the degree; Applied English Language Studies, African Literature, Linguistics, Literary Theory, Communication, and Media Studies.

University of Stellenbosch, SU PGCE Application Procedures

In order to apply online, you will need a valid mail address and cell phone number. Correspondence will be sent to the email address provided, and messages will be sent to the cell phone.

  • Application fees can be paid as part of the online application process (only South African candidates pay an application fee).
  • Cash payments may also be made in person at the cashier at the Administration A building (Stellenbosch Campus).

  • Your application will only be processed AFTER the application has been finalized AND all the correct supporting documents have been uploaded via the ‘Upload application documents‘ link BEFORE the closing date.
  • It remains your responsibility to make sure that the University receives all your documents in time.
