We are pleased and excited to announce to you that the University of the Free State’s UFS Online Application for the 2024–2025 academic year, as well as the application for 2023–2024, is closed. Therefore, all interested and qualified applicants should take note. We are not just making this announcement known but also providing various steps on how to apply online for UFS admission.
Gather all the necessary documents and get ready to follow the steps on our website to complete a successful UFS online application. We will try as much as possible to make your application smooth and seamless. But before we proceed, remember that this application is open to all prospective undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate students. The only thing you need right now to apply for admission to the prestigious University of the Free State is for you to be eligible and ready.
The management of the University of the Free State, UFS, is no stranger to technology, as they have made this application exclusively online, unlike the rigorous task of going through the paper-based application only when necessary. This is why they opened an application portal for all high school leavers and those trying to further their studies, either part-time or full-time.
Brace up and read along as we guide you through the UFS online application procedure for the 2024–2025 academic year.
STEPS ON HOW TO APPLY ONLINE FOR UFS ADMISSION

Kindly follow the easy steps below to apply online for UFS (University of the Free State Online Application) admission:
STEP 1: Apply Online
- Please apply online via the UFS Application Portal if you are enrolling in an undergraduate, postgraduate, study abroad, or graduate school of business exchange programme.
- Kindly click on ‘New Application‘ if you are applying for the first time or simply enter your email address as an ‘existing user’.
- Fill in the required details on the verification page and verify your email and phone number before proceeding. Kindly click on ‘next‘ to proceed.
- You will then be required to follow the prompts, fill in the required personal information, contact information, study choices, and selection information, and upload the necessary documents. (Check the UFS Application Fee and how to Pay Here)
- You will then be required to read and consent to UFS’s agreement before you can continue.
- When you are done, kindly click on the ‘Submit‘ button to get your application submitted.
Note:
- Please click HERE to consult the 2024–2025 Undergraduate Prospectus to ensure you meet the minimum entrance requirements before applying.
- Each prospective student must complete the online application.
- Once your online application has been submitted and processed, you will receive a student number (reference number).
- Receiving a student number (reference number) does not imply that you have been accepted by the University of the Free State yet.
- In the case of applicants re-writing Grade 12 subjects, applications will be processed based on the current results available. If Grade 12 has been written more than once, then your combined results must be submitted with your application.
- Applicants writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) through IEB or SACAI examining bodies can apply online by selecting “National Senior Certificate” under the Results Detail page of the online application process.
- Applicants currently in Grade 12 are requested to provide school-stamped copies of their final Grade 11.
- Applicants transferring from another university/tertiary institution are required to declare their previous studies when applying, as well as upload an official full academic record, transcript, and degree/diploma certificate (where applicable).
- The University of the Free State does not accept the General Education Development (GED) test for entry into any of its curricular undergraduate qualifications. The GED is no longer recognised by Universities South Africa (USAf) and is not equivalent to a South African grade 12 (NSC/IEB/SACAI). Applicants who completed the GED and would like to study towards an undergraduate curricular qualification are advised to register and complete a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or international equivalent thereof.
- Applicants who did not complete SC/NSC/IEB must have USAF accreditation from the examination board for South African universities. To apply for conditional exemption, foreign conditional exemption, or mature age conditional exemption, send an email to applications@usaf.ac.za.
- To apply for the University Access Programmes (UAP), please click HERE to ensure you meet the minimum admission requirements before applying.
STEP 2: Acknowledgement of Application
- You will receive an email confirming online submission of your application immediately.
- Within three working days, you should receive formal acknowledgment of your application along with your student number and log-in details.
- Note that this acknowledgement does not mean you’ve been accepted or admitted to UFS.
STEP 3: Upload Supporting Documents
As stated on the UFS Application page, documents must be submitted as certified electronic copies on the application portal.
STEP 4: Acceptance of Offer
When we update your application, you will receive an email notification. Please monitor your email account closely for updates.
