The United Kingdom has long been a hub for advanced academic pursuits, and with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK at the helm, thousands of aspiring professionals have been given a chance to further their studies. For those South African graduates and job seekers with a thirst for knowledge and a drive to contribute to global development, the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2024/25 are a golden opportunity.

UK Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships Eligibility

To be considered for this prestigious scholarship, candidates need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen of, or have been granted refugee status by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
  • Maintain permanent residence in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Commit to beginning your academic studies in the UK by the start of the academic year in September 2024.
  • By September 2024, possess a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard or a second class degree (2:2) coupled with a pertinent postgraduate qualification.
  • Demonstrate financial need, indicating an inability to study in the UK without this scholarship.
  • Provide full academic transcripts, including current qualifications (translations are required if not in English).
  • Furnish references from a minimum of two individuals.
  • While the CSC generally does not fund a second UK Master’s degree, candidates can be considered upon providing solid reasoning behind their decision to undertake a second Master’s.

Note: Individuals intending to pursue an MBA are not eligible as the CSC does not fund this programme.

Application Procedure

Interested candidates need to follow a structured application process:

  • University and Course Selection: Utilise resources such as the British Council’s Study UK, Steps to Postgraduate Study, Postgrad.com, Prospects, Research Excellent Framework 2021 results, UCAS Postgraduate, Discover Uni, and UKCISA to make an informed decision regarding your institution and course of study.
  • Application Submission:
    • The Department of Higher Education and Training (the Department) acts as a nominating agency for South African candidates. Choose ‘South Africa: Higher Education and Training’ for nomination through the Department.
    • Apply online via the CSC’s application system, ensuring that you follow the guidance provided in the ‘How to Apply’ section specific to each scholarship.
