UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE ACADEMIC SCHEDULE FOR 2024 ACADEMIC SESSIONS
ACADEMIC TERMS:
- 1st Term: Monday, 12 February – Wednesday, 20 March
- 2nd Term: Tuesday, 2 April – Friday, 17 May
- 3rd Term: Monday, 22 July – Friday, 30 August
- 4th Term: Monday, 9 September – Tuesday, 22 October
ALMANAC HIGHLIGHTS:
- JANUARY starts with New Year’s Day on the 1st, followed by university offices opening on the 3rd and various academic activities commencing throughout the month, including clinical placements and registrations.
- FEBRUARY includes the opening of residences for various student groups and continues with a series of due dates for submissions of documentation for committees and registrations.
- MARCH consists of academic and clinical activities commencing for several programmes, various committee due dates, and the opening of residences for first-year students.
- APRIL marks the beginning of the academic year/first term, and first semester on the 12th.
- MAY sees the end of the first term on the 20th.
- JUNE to AUGUST outline ongoing academic activities, committee meetings, due dates for document submissions, and end with the third term closing and vacation beginning.
- SEPTEMBER brings the beginning of the fourth term on the 9th.
- OCTOBER has the fourth term and second semester ending, with several due dates for submissions leading up to graduations.
- NOVEMBER starts with the graduation period and continues with important due dates and closures for the university year.
- DECEMBER outlines the close of clinical placements, residences, and university offices, and highlights Christmas Day and the Day of Goodwill.
JANUARY
- 1: New Year’s Day
- 3: University offices open, clinical placement commences for BSc Occupational Therapy Students, residences open for BSc Occupational Therapy and BNursing Students
- 8: Clinical placement commences for BNursing II, III, IV & V Students
- 10: Online registration opens for all faculties for first-time entry students returning Senior Masters and Ph.D. Students
- 12: Residences open for BSc Dietetics IV Students, closing date for applications for readmissions (2023 academically excluded students), for remarking of Nov/Dec 2023 examination scripts, due date for submission of documentation for Senate Higher Degrees Committee (SHD) [2023 Progress Reports and Promotions]
- 15: Internship of BSc Dietetics IV Students commences, Senate Discretionary Assessments (SDA) commences, due date for documentation for ICT Portfolio Steering Committee (ICTPSC)
- 16: Clinical placement commences for BSc Physiotherapy Students, residences open for BSc Physiotherapy Students
- 17: Senate Discretionary Assessments (SDA) ends
- 19: Due date for submission of documentation for Senate Executive Committee (SEC)
- 22 to 31: Various due dates for submission of documentation to faculty committees
- 1: Due date for documentation for Faculty Professorial Appointments and Promotions Committee (FPAPC), Joint Appointments and Promotions Committee of Senate and Council (SA), residences open for II, III, IV, V Dentistry Students
- 2: Academic and clinical activities commence for BDS II, III, IV, and V Students; BOH II and III Students
- 3: Due date for submission of documentation for Animal Research Ethics Committee (AREC), Senate Higher Degrees Committee (SHD), Employment Equity Forum (EEF), Senate Assessment Committee (SAC)
- 4 to 28: Various other activities including opening of residences for first-year students, meetings of committees like ICTPSC and Executive Management Committee (EMC), and further due dates for submission of documentation
- Details for March continue with academic activities, committee meetings, and submissions of documentation for various academic and administrative processes.
- 12: Beginning of the academic year/first term and first semester
- 20: End of the first term
- 22: Comments of the draft mid-year assessment timetable open to students
- 25: Senate Assessment Committee (SAC) meets, publication of April 2024 final graduation list
- 28: Council meets, closes comments of the draft mid-year assessment timetable to students
- 29: Good Friday
- 31: Easter Sunday, due date for accounts settled in full for a 3% discount
- 1: Family Day, end of student vacation
- 2: Beginning of the second term
- 17: End of the second term, study period commences
- 23: Mid-year assessments commence
- 31: Student vacation begins
- 1 to 30: Continuation of student vacation, various committee meetings, due dates for documentation submissions, opening applications for remarking of exams, and closure of residences for winter vacation
- 1: Executive Management Committee (EMC) meets
- 2: Registrar’s Administrative Forum (RAF)
- 17: Public Holiday, various committee meetings
- 25: Council meets, end of second term & academic program or first semester, student vacation begins, residences close for winter vacation
- 1: Due date for submission of documentation for Institutional Forum (IF), Employment Equity Forum (EEF), Faculty Board meets for the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences
- 25: Senate Discretionary Assessments commence
- 30: Due date for creation of second semester assessment schedules on MAS, closing date for applications for remarking of May/June 2024 examination scripts, Faculty Board for the Faculty of Law meets
- 1 to 3: Various committee meetings and due dates for documentation submissions
- 28: End of third term, Senate Assessment Committee (SAC) meets, applications for Dentistry Undergraduate Programmes close, comments of draft year-end assessment timetable to students close
- 9: Beginning of the fourth term, Executive Management Committee (EMC) meets
- 22: Study period ends
- 23: Mid-year assessments commence
- 31: Humanities and Social Science Research Ethics Committee (HSSREC) meets
- 12: Second semester registration period commences
DECEMBER
- 2: Last day of the academic year for students
- 4: Last day of the academic year for academic staff
- 8: Last day of the academic year for professional, administrative support and service staff
- 11: University offices close for the year
- 16: Day of Reconciliation (Public Holiday)
- 25: Christmas Day (Public Holiday)
- 26: Day of Goodwill (Public Holiday)
