20 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE WITS UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS

  • APS Calculation — Life Orientation is excluded from the main APS, and only your best six subjects count. English and Mathematics get a bonus of +2 points each in the Wits APS system.
  • Highest Entry Requirement — LLB (Law) has the highest APS requirement at 46+, making it the most competitive programme at Wits.
  • Engineering is Broad but Consistent — All engineering degrees (Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, etc.) share the same entry requirement: APS 42+, with a 5 in English, Maths, and Physical Sciences.
  • Health Sciences Requires NBT — All Health Sciences applicants must write the National Benchmark Test (NBT) by 18 August 2026, no exceptions.
  • Medicine is the Most Demanding — The MBBCh (Medicine and Surgery) is 6 years long and uniquely requires a Job Shadowing Certificate of at least 16 hours, completed between 1–31 July.
  • Early Deadlines for Competitive Programmes — Health Sciences, Architecture, Audiology, Film & Television, and Speech-Language Pathology all close on 30 June 2026 — months before the general 30 September deadline.
  • Science Faculty Requires NBT Too — All BSc applicants must write the NBT by 31 October 2026.
  • Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences Need a 7 in Maths — These are among the most mathematically demanding programmes, requiring a level 7 (80–89%) in Mathematics.
  • Arts Programmes Have Additional Requirements — Theatre, Film, Fine Arts, Music, and Digital Arts all require auditions or portfolios. You can’t just meet the APS — you have to show creative ability.
  • NSFAS Eligibility Threshold — Households earning up to R350,000 annually qualify for NSFAS. Those earning between R350,000 and R600,000 must apply online for possible partial support.
  • Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship — The top ten matriculants can receive a R50,000 tuition grant. It’s highly competitive but worth pursuing if you’re an exceptional student.
  • University Entrance Scholarships Start at APS 43 — You don’t need to be perfect to get financial help. An APS of 43–44 earns R10,000, scaling up to R42,000 for an APS of 51+.
  • Maths Literacy is Rarely Accepted — Most Science, Engineering, and Commerce programmes do not accept Maths Literacy. Only a handful of Humanities and Commerce programmes allow it.
  • Architectural Studies is More Accessible — With an APS of just 34+ and no Physical Sciences requirement, it’s one of the lower entry-barrier programmes in Engineering — but requires a written and graphic drawing exercise.
  • 1 in 5 Students Live on Campus — Wits has 14 residences, but space is limited. Residence applications also close 30 September 2026, so apply early.
  • Gateway to Success (GTS) is Compulsory — Every new first-year student must complete this two-week orientation programme. It covers academic writing, digital skills, health, and wellness.
  • R250 Million Sports Complex Opening in 2026 — The Brian & Dorothy Zylstra Sports Complex will include an Olympic pool, athlete residence, biokinetics rooms, and research facilities — a major upgrade to campus life.
  • Over 30 Sporting Codes Available — From football and rugby to netball and basketball, Wits has extensive sporting infrastructure including two existing Olympic-sized pools and a fitness centre.
  • Digital Dome for Science Engagement — The Wits Anglo American Digital Dome offers immersive 360-degree astronomy and science shows from Tuesday to Friday. A unique resource for science-inclined students.
  • Apply Online and Track Your Status — All applications go through the WITS Online application portal. You upload documents, pay the application fee, and track everything via a self-service portal. There’s also a “Kudubot” chatbot to help with queries.
