A flight attendant is a customer service career often referred to as steward/stewardess or air host/air hostess. It is always the delight of teenagers to be like them someday, these is because of the way they look, dress, speak or walk and they start thinking I wish to be like them someday. This article plans to explain in detail how you can become a flight attendant. Flight attendant(s) is a member of an aircrew recruited by both public and private airlines to enforce security and relaxation of passengers; they are collectively referred to as cabin crew. They are a team of personnel who operate in a commercial, business, or military aircraft travelling domestically or internationally, they can be male and female, male flight attendants are referred to as stewards or air hosts and the female attendants are stewardesses or air hostesses.

  • Steer heavy carts loaded with food and drink to sell and service to the flying public.
  • Make sure that passengers remain seated when required by the flight crew, and that their seat belts are securely fastened on takeoff, landing and in turbulent flight periods.
  • Be prepared to aid special needs and older passengers on board and de-board the flight.
  • They report any wrong or unavailable items in the aircraft before taking-off
  • Apply first aid to passengers in need and be prepared to administer emergency medical care, when needed, and to prep an ailing passenger for the transition to EMTs when landing.
  • Flight attendants also need to direct passengers when evacuating the aircraft in an emergency.
  • They oversee the cabin of any harm, difficulty or danger
  •  They assist with the loading, checking for weight, size and inspecting contraband or precarious bags and goods.
  • They enforce appropriate sitting measures, those in the emergency exit rows must be agile and ready to help in an event of danger.
  • They do a routine check before/after boarding and ensure passengers are secured and enforce them to watch security/safety demonstration while they supervise.
  •  They secure the cabin: making the tray tables are stowed, seats in upright positions, armrests down and carry-ons stowed correctly, and seat belts are fastened prior to take-off.

On Air
  • They serve refreshments in food and drinks to passengers with an airline service trolley.
  • They engage in cabin checks for any issue, they check the lavatory to ensure the smoke detector hasn’t been disabled or destroyed and to restock supplies as needed.
  • Regular cockpit checks must be done to ensure the health and safety of the pilot(s).
  • They must also respond to call lights dealing with special requests.
  • In an event of turbulent times, they enforce law and order.
  • Before landing, they gather all available loose items example like trays and rubbish must be collected and secured along with service and galley equipment. All hot liquids must be disposed of. A final cabin check must then be completed prior to landing. It is vital that flight attendants remain aware as many emergencies occur during take-off and landing.
  • Upon landing, flight attendants must remain stationed at exits and monitor the airplane and cabin as passengers disembark the plane. They also assist any special needs passengers and small children off the airplane and escort children, while following the proper paperwork and ID process to escort them to the designated person picking them up.

In Emergencies
  • They are taught first aid practices for any sort of injury which affect passengers. Some of these are bleeding nose, illness, cut or intoxicated passengers, aggressive and anxiety-stricken passengers. Emergency training includes rejected take-offs, emergency landings, cardiac and in-flight medical situations, smoke in the cabin, fires, depressurization, on-board births and deaths, dangerous goods and spills in the cabin, emergency evacuations, hijackings, and water landings.

Training Guidelines for Flight Attendants

They are taught in different aspects as included in their responsibilities

  • customer service,
  • pre-flight procedures, boarding, in-flight service,

These trainings are taught in airline schools and on flight (young and new flight students are linked up with experienced flight attendant who direct and teach, although they receive paid training after being hired by an airline), other are specialist training centres which take 8weeks of training.

Since the year 2004, it is required that any flight attendant who intends to works on an aircraft above 20 seats must have a Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which is issued after you have successfully completed a Federal Aviation Administration FAA training program in an airline or certified training school, this program emphasize on health and safety, fire prevention and control, the use of emergency equipment, aircraft evacuation and escape, and survival skills for different kinds of crash scenarios.

For fresh flight attendant jobs, you must be at least 18 and hold a high school diploma or GED, but for some jobs, you may need to wait until you are 21 to apply. For freshers, you must complete a time period of training before been allowed to work.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median yearly salary for flight attendants in the United States was $37,740 in 2010. A fresh flight attendant can expect to make between $16,000 and $25,000 per year, while experienced flight attendants may earn $50,000 or more.
