Babette Taute Honours Scholarships Eligibility

  • Nationality/Residency: Applicants should either be South African citizens or hold permanent resident status in South Africa.
  • Course of Study: The scholarship is available for full-time students pursuing a one-year honours programme in any branch of English language and literature study, encompassing applied language studies.
  • Merit Criteria: A strong academic record is essential. But the selection doesn’t end there. Factors such as leadership roles in cultural or social endeavors, quality of writing, publications, teaching excellence in English, or proficiency as a translator are also considered.
  • Financial Considerations: Recipients of the Babette Taute Scholarship can accept other awards, but the combined value should not surpass R120,000. If it does, the Babette Taute Scholarship amount might be adjusted to ensure adherence to this rule.

Application Procedure

  1. Acquiring the Application Form: The form is available at the Department of English, the financial aid office of the concerned university, or can be directly requested from The Babette Taute Trust through either Ms. Naaznien Parker (Naaznien.Parker@sanlam.co.za) or Helene Schneider (Helene.Schneider@sanlam.co.za).
  2. Form Submission: Ensure that you send your completed application to both Ms. Parker and Ms. Schneider. It’s imperative that forms reach both of them on or before the deadline.
  3. Required Attachments:
    • A concise CV, preferably 1-2 pages, showcasing your achievements and activities from the past few years
    • A writing sample, limited to 500 words, that represents your skills and passion for the English language This can range from a poem to a short story or any other form of creative writing.
    • An updated official transcript of your academic record at the university or an authenticated copy
    • Additional documents that highlight your suitability for the scholarship
    • Details of two academic referees familiar with your English studies at the university level Ensure your referees are informed, and they should directly send their confidential reports to the Babette Taute Trust.
  4. Final Results Submission: By December 15, 2023, you are expected to forward your final results. If comprehensive results aren’t accessible by then, at the very least, your final grade for English should be sent, endorsed by the course convenor or department head.
  5. Communication: Every email or correspondence regarding the scholarship should have the subject line formatted as “Babette Taute 2024 Application/Query: (Your Surname)”.
  6. Format Requirements: No screenshots are permitted, and all documents must be in PDF format.
