With the advancement in technology, access to information has been made easier in every sector including educational institutions. Libraries are rapidly expanding to web-based delivery of content and related access services to cater the information needs and expectations of their users. One way this has been achieved is through the design and development multi-tiered programme level applications such as a portal.

The library portal is a tool used to organize information resources and services in a way that supports the needs of users. Library portal is a key to knowledge; it is an effective tool for web-enabled information services.

This article is focused on University of Cape Town’s library portal, what is offers, etc.

Like many other universities  in the world, UCT has equally taken advantage of the  rapid growth in technology to provide services  to  its  academic  community at ease  by  selecting, organizing , disseminating information resources,  supporting research and education via the development of a library portal. One of the advantages of this is that library sites are devoid of limitations in terms of opening and closing hours associated with the operations of physical libraries. This means that it can be accessed at any given time provided there is constant internet connection.

UCT Libraries offer state-of-the-art technology, vast collections of reading and research material, and the specialised services of friendly, efficient and helpful staff. The UCT Libraries website http://www.lib.uct.ac.za/ is a portal to an avalanche of information and resources. The libraries portal provides important information about library hours and other services as well as provides research materials including:

  • Online reference works
  • Articles
  • Electronic journals
  • Bibliographic and full-text databases
  • E-Books
  • Primo, a discovery and delivery tool for books.

The digital Library Services unit offers Digital scholarship, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data stewardship services to the research, teaching and learning communities at UCT.

HOW TO ACCESS THE UCT LIBRARY PORTAL

The UCT library portal was designed for both on and off campus students, but recently, the option is no longer available for off campus students. In other words, you no longer need to use off-campus login to access Libraries resources off-campus as the login link has been removed from the UCT Libraries website.

However, EZProxy has been integrated into links from the following library resources for a seamless library experience.

  • Databases A-Z
  • Primo
  • Google Scholar(GS)

Thus, to access the library resources, you will be required to login via UCT’s Single Sign-On service.

How to Use the Links

If you open Google Scholar from the UCT Libraries’ home page using the GS button which is available on the UCT libraries just below the default search box, you will be able to see resources that are accessible to you through UCT Libraries.

On retrieving resources, items with ‘ViewIt@UCT’ will link back to Primo. Primo is the UCT Libraries’ search tool which allows you to easily find what you need. You can sign in for more activities like saving records, reserving a book, and exporting citations.

Another option is to configure your Google Scholar account so that your search for items at UCT libraries will be indicated with ViewIt@UCT. In order to do this set up,

  • Open Google Scholar. From the top left corner click on the three bars icon.
  • Select the Settings option.
  • On the Settings page select, ‘Library links’ and in the search box search for University of Cape Town. Then check University of Cape Town and save.

This will allow you to see if retrieved resources are available at UCT Libraries. You can easily access the website using your phone, tablet, laptop or computer.

In conclusion, to access the UCT library website, you will need your name and a unique password.
