Application for the University of Free State (UFS) Mentor Program for First Year Students – 2024 Entry is now open for all outstanding UFS students who wish to be mentored through school.
Why is there a peer mentor programme at the UFS? The answer is simple. The Peer Mentor programme is designed to help you, as a first-year student, transition to higher education by providing social and emotional support.
How?
A peer mentor is a trained senior student that will support you through:
- Listening to you;
- Connecting you to vital resources and opportunities;
- Serving as a role model for you;
- Creating solutions with you to meet your needs.
The person who would also be giving your peer counselling. Peer counselling is a special programme focusing on peers helping peers. The duty of a peer counsellor is to mediate problems between students by helping them find their answers. Prior to becoming advanced peer counsellors, the students have gone through a year of beginning peer counselling, in which they have developed skills and techniques for problem-solving and peer mediating.
How do I join the UFS peer mentor programme?
- Step 1: Look out for communication on Blackboard. The peer mentor team will automatically assign you to a peer mentor and notify you in this regard.
- Step 2: Respond to the peer mentor invitation on Blackboard.
- Step 3: Engage regularly with your peer mentor and mentor group.
The interested person(s) must be registered as a student as a first-year UFS student in 2024. If you have questions or uncertainties, please send an email to PeerMentor@ufs.ac.za
