To use the Walter Sisulu University, WSU online application feature, you must have a working internet device, a valid email address which is not shared with another Walter Sisulu University, WSU applicant, your South African identity number, or, if you are an international applicant, your passport number. Kindly follow the easy steps below to apply online for Walter Sisulu University, WSU (Walter Sisulu University, WSU Online Application) admission:    

1. Apply Online    

  • Step 1: Please apply online via the Walter Sisulu University, WSU Application Portal if you are enrolling in Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Study Abroad or Graduate School of Business Exchange Programme.    
  • Step 2: If you are a first-time user, you will then be prompted to answer ‘YES’ or ‘NO’ to the required fields  
  • Step 3:  Complete all the information that is requested and note that all fields with a red asterisk are compulsory and will not allow you to proceed if left blank or incorrect information is supplied.
  • Step 4: After you are done with the above steps, you will then be taken to the page where you will be required to fill in all the necessary information, like your Personal Details, Nationality, Address Information, disability information, Study Choices, Residential Address, Postal Address, Contact Details, Demographic Details, Next of Kin, Emergency Contact, Current Activities, Employment, Education, Indemnity and Undertaking, make Payment and upload the necessary Documents.    
  • Step 4: Complete all the fields and click ‘Next’ at each interval to proceed. 
  • Step 5: When you are done, kindly click on the ‘Submit‘ button to get your application submitted.

Please Note:

  • Your application will be completed once all of the necessary fees have been paid.
  • It is compulsory to have an email address. You may create one on Gmail or Yahoo.
  • All the communication that will follow after you have successfully completed your application will be sent to the email address you have provided.
  • Should you encounter a problem during the application process, send us your query to supportappl@wsu.ac.za.
  • You will be advised if additional information is required to assist during the assessment process.
  • If you completed the NSC certificate after 2008, you do not have to upload this information, as we already have access to it.
  • You will also be asked to apply for residence and financial assistance. Email addresses will be sent to you with instructions on the process for applying.

2. Acknowledgement of Application    

  • You will receive an email confirming the online submission of your application immediately. 
  • Within three working days, you should receive formal acknowledgment of your application along with your student number and log-in details.   
  • Note: this acknowledgement does not mean you’ve been accepted or admitted to Walter Sisulu University, UL.   

3. Upload Supporting Documents    

In order to consider your application, please upload every necessary supporting documents listed below on this article. If the application is incomplete, it may be declined by the University.  

4. Acceptance of Offer    

When we update your application, you will receive an email notification. Please monitor your email account closely for updates. You can also check your status online with the log-in credentials that we will send you after you apply. We are not permitted to disclose your application status telephonically.

New applicants:

The university considers various post-matric certificates for admission purposes.

1. The following certificates are accepted:

  • The “Old Senior” certificate
  • The National Senior Certificate, “NSC”
  • National Certificate Vocational, “NCV”
  • N6 certificate
  • Some departments may consider mature-age exemption for admission into some programmes. For more information, you may enquire from the Admissions Office at supportappl@wsu.ac.za.
Transfer students:

Students who are from another tertiary institution may apply and submit the following documents:

  • Matric Certificate
  • Post-matric certificate;
  • Identity document;
  • Official academic report;
  • Conduct certificate

  • To check or verify your WSU Application status, log in with the student number that was assigned to you when you first applied. 

3. Can I please get my student number and pin?

You can easily retrieve your PIN by following these steps: 

  • Step 1: Visit the “Login window”  through the WSU student portal 
  • Step 2: Click on “Forgotten your PIN”. 
  • Step 3: Read the instruction and complete the open requested fields. Click “Next”. 
  • Step 4: Your PIN will be sent to your email address and the cell phone number you applied with. 
  • If the above is unsuccessful, please contact the Enrollment Management Department Call Centre Office at 015 268 3332. You can send your date of birth and surname to supportappl@wsu.ac.za so that we can search for it on our system.

  • The online application has a handling fee of R0. It is totally free.

7. When and where can I apply for WSU bursaries?

  • You can go to the WSU website at: https://www.wsu.ac.za/index.php/grants-bursaries-conferences-other-funding for information on bursaries and funding. 

8. When are your Open Days for WSU?

  • All WSU Open Days are currently virtual. This is to ensure that our stakeholders stay safe and healthy. 

9. Can I still change my course or qualification after applying?

  • You can change your course if there is space in the faculty you would like to change to and if you meet the admission requirements. You can send your request to the admission office at: supportappl@wsu.ac.za

10. How do I apply for WSU residences?

  • You can apply for the residences when you apply to study at WSU by completing the online application. The options for the different residences are on the online application.  

11. Can I still qualify to study at your university if I studied at another institution?

  • When you apply, you still need to add your matriculation certificate with the academic record from your current institution. The Faculty will decide about admission and credits.

  • We aim to reply as soon as possible, but we receive a large number of applications. This is also dependent on the submission of all relevant documentation and the time frame in which you apply. 

14. My ID number already exists on the system; when I want to apply online, who can I contact?

15. For which courses do I qualify?

16. I was unsuccessful in my WSU application. What does this mean?

You do not adhere to one or all of the following requirements: 

  • Do not qualify for Bacclaureus (University admission) 
  • Correct APS 
  • Specific subject requirements for the degree 
  • Capacity limitations: Please note that, owing to specific capacity constraints, the University reserves the right to select candidates for admission to certain fields of study. This means that prospective students who comply with the minimum requirements will not automatically be admitted to the courses in question. Because of capacity limitations and the high demand from students for admission to particular fields of study, students will be selected on the basis of their Grade 12 results for admission to these fields. 

17. Can I apply with a Birth Certificate?

  • No, it must be an ID. 

18. How can I update my contact details?

  • Prospective applicants (those who have already submitted their applications) can update their contact details on the applications webpage. 
  • Log in with your student number and chosen PIN. Click on “Already have a university number” and choose “Update Contact Details on Existing Application.”. The Contact Details page will display, and you can update your details, which will reflect throughout your application. 

19. How can I update my application details?

  • Prospective applicants (who have already submitted their applications) can request a change of qualification by submitting a request to the following email address: supportappl@wsu.ac.za please be sure to include your student number and contact details in the email.
