We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024/2025 CARTA PhD Fellowship is now open.
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) is now accepting applications for its 2024-2025 PhD fellowship programme. CARTA, a collaboration between African universities, research institutes, and global partners, provides an innovative doctoral training model in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim is to produce high-quality graduates who can lead impactful research addressing health and development challenges in Africa.
CARTA PhD Fellowship Eligibility
To be eligible for the CARTA PhD Fellowship, applicants must:
- Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Not be registered for a PhD, or be in the first year of the programme.
- Be teaching or research staff at one of the participating African institutions.
- Propose PhD research relevant to public and population health.
- Commit to participating in all four annual Joint Advanced Seminars (JASes).
- For male applicants, be under the age of 40, and for female applicants, be under 45.

The fellowship is available to staff members at several African institutions, including:
- Makerere University, Uganda
- Moi University, Kenya
- Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria
- University of Ibadan, Nigeria
- Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi
- University of Nairobi, Kenya
- University of Rwanda, Rwanda
- University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (excluding South Africans)
- Somali National University, Somalia
- African Population and Health Research Center, Kenya
- Agincourt Health and Population Unit, South Africa
- Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania
Application Procedure
Interested individuals must:
- Contact the CARTA focal person at their institution or download application forms from the CARTA website.
- Submit application forms and reference letters to institutional focal persons by April 15, 2024, with a copy to the CARTA Secretariat (email: carta@aphrc.org).
- Await nomination by their institution and an invitation to the full application process.
Full applications must be submitted via the official portal and will include a research proposal, CV, letter of support, three timed tasks, and two free online courses. The institutional selection process will occur between April 15 and May 15, 2024, with a final fellowship decision communicated by November 1, 2024.
