SHS And Category A Schools in Ghana – 2020

0

This article contains information on the list of senior high schools(SHS) and category A schools in Ghana for the year 2020.

Ghana operates on a 6334 educational system but there was a shift from the 6334 system to 6344 from 2007  to 2009 after which the system  was reversed to the initial. The Education Service(GES) has grouped all the senior high schools(SHS) into 4 major categories. This is to help final year Junior high schools (JHS) students who have the desire to go to senior secondary school to be able to choose schools and also to know how to prepare towards getting admission in those chosen schools.

SHS And Category A Schools in Ghana - 2020

The divisions are in A, B, C, D categories. Private senior high schools, Technical and Vocational schools are not left out too. Category ‘A’ schools are known to be the best in  SHS category in Ghana, followed by the ‘B’ and then the “C” and the “D” respectively. This is based on their academic performance and available facilities in the school.

The Senior High School was introduced in 2007, thereby expanding the system from three to four years  which did not in any way change the curriculum regardless. Admission to Senior Senior High School is very competitive. For instance, only 150,000 students can be admitted into the 500 public and 200 private National secondary schools.

At the end of Senior High School, all students take the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, or WASSCE of which they are required to sit for Seven or Eight subjects as the case may be. The curriculum is composed of core subjects including English language, Mathematics, integrated science such as ICT and environmental studies and social studies such as Economics, geography, history and government.

While Senior high schools are divided into Categories, it is important to note that not all Senior High Schools (SHS) are Category-A Schools.

A SHS ranking is established every year by the Statistics, Research, Information, Management and Public Relations (SRIMPR) division of the ministry of Education. In other words, based on the WASSCE results, there is always an upgrade in SHS category ranking. This implies that schools that are recorded to perform excellently in WAEC exams are being upgraded to Category-A schools.
