SHS And Category A Schools in Ghana – 2026
This article contains information on the list of Senior High Schools (SHS) and Category A schools in Ghana for 2026.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has grouped all Senior High Schools (SHS) into four major categories — A, B, C, and D. This is to help final-year Junior High School (JHS) students who wish to proceed to Senior High School to choose schools and prepare adequately for admission. Private Senior High Schools, Technical and Vocational schools are also part of this broader classification framework.
Category A schools are recognized as the highest tier in the SHS category in Ghana, followed by Category B, then C, and finally D. This classification is based on academic performance and available facilities in the school.
The four-year Senior High School system was introduced in 2007. At the end of Senior High School, all students take the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), sitting for either seven or eight subjects. The curriculum is composed of core subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science (which includes ICT and Environmental Studies), and Social Studies (which includes Economics, Geography, History, and Government).
Not all Senior High Schools are Category A schools. A school’s category ranking is reviewed periodically by the Statistics, Research, Information, Management and Public Relations (SRIMPR) division of the Ministry of Education. Schools that record excellent performance in WAEC examinations may be upgraded to Category A. Category B schools can also be upgraded to Category A based on demonstrated improvements in infrastructure, academic performance, and governance.
Important: For the 2026 academic year, prospective students and parents must verify a school’s current official category status using only the authoritative government sources:
- The Free SHS Secretariat School Register at freeshs.gov.gh
- The GES Official School Directory at ges.gov.gh
Category classifications are subject to change. Information from third-party websites may be outdated. Admission into public SHSs, including Category A schools, is processed exclusively through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) at cssps.gov.gh.

The school has consistently performed strongly in the WASSCE over the years. It has always strived to provide holistic education for females so that they can attain an enviable place in society and become “Women of Substance.” The school motto is “Facta Non Verba,” which means “Actions Not Words.”
3. ST. ANDREWS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
St. Andrews Senior High School was established by Dr. Richard Kofi Asiedu in 2005. The school started with a humble beginning of just 25 students and 4 tutors. Over time, the school grew significantly. In 2007 the school received accreditation from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and recognition from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in 2011. In 2015, the Ghana Education Service accorded the school the status of a Grade A Private SHS.
The headmaster of the school holds a Master of Philosophy Degree (MPhil — Education Management) after obtaining a Bachelor of Education from the University of Cape Coast.
4. POTSIN TI AHMADIYYA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Potsin TI Ahmadiyya Senior High School is located in Gomoa Potsin, near Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana. It was established in 1972 under the Nusrat Jahan Scheme and became a Government Assisted School in 1984.

5. KNUST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
KNUST Senior High School was established in February 1961 by the then Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. R.P. Baffour. The school was formerly known as the Technology Secondary School until 2007. It was originally set up to provide secondary school education to the children of university staff before later opening admission to the general public.
KNUST Senior High School is a Class A institution according to the Ghana Education Service. It is a co-educational school offering the following programmes: General Arts, Visual Arts, Business, Engineering Science, Home Science, and General Sciences.
6. EJURAMAN ANGLICAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Ejuraman Anglican SHS started in 1973 with twenty students. Due to early challenges, the school closed after a few months and was revived in 1976 with forty-five students. It faced further administrative and financial difficulties before being re-established in January 1991 under the Educational Reform Programme of 1987, with a student population of twenty-eight, three National Service Personnel, and eighteen non-teaching staff. The school was officially commissioned on 12 May 1993.
In 2004, the school was renamed “Ejuraman Anglican Secondary School” after the Board of Governors’ request was approved by the Ghana Education Service. The school’s motto is “LEARN AND APPLY.”
Ghana has thousands of Senior High Schools across different categories. The list cannot be exhausted in this article. Not all SHSs are ranked as Category A schools. Schools ranked under this category have been found to be high-performing, judged primarily by their results in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations.
