he French Embassy in South Africa extends an annual call for students from South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi to participate in the France-South Africa Scholarship Programme. The scholarship program offers a unique opportunity for students to undertake their Master’s or PhD studies at universities or higher education institutions in France. Open to all fields of study, the program aims to foster high-level exchanges between France and South Africa, contributing to academic excellence and bilateral relationships.

France-South Africa Scholarship Benefits

The France-South Africa Scholarship Programme provides an enticing array of benefits. Participants selected under the full scholarship scheme enjoy:

  • France Excellence scholarship holder status, ensuring priority for student housing, visa fee exemption, social security, and Campus France Paris’ support.
  • A return flight ticket to France.
  • A monthly allowance (approximately 850 euros for Master students and 1400 euros for PhD students).
  • Potential for additional individualized accommodation aid (around 150 euros/month) from the French Government.

Alternatively, a cost-sharing scholarship scheme is available, in which the monthly allowance is partially or fully covered by a partner, but all other full scholarship benefits still apply.

France-South Africa Scholarship Eligibility

Eligibility for this program is based on several key requirements:

  • Applicants must be born on or after January 1st, 1994.
  • They should be a citizen of South Africa, Lesotho, or Malawi.
  • They must be enrolled in a French Higher Education institution to pursue a Master’s degree or PhD.

The scholarship duration aligns with the requisite time to attain the respective degrees.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted online, complete with the necessary documents:

  • A completed application form.
  • A passport copy.
  • An updated résumé detailing the applicant’s academic history.
  • A cover letter expressing motivations and interests in the planned academic project.
  • Copies of academic degree certificates (Bachelor or Master only).
  • University transcripts for at least two years of studies.

Application Dates

The call for applications is launched annually. The upcoming call will open on May 25, 2023, for students aiming to commence their studies in France in September 2024. All applicants should finalize their enrollment in their chosen study program post-application and are required to attend intensive online French courses provided from February 2024 to June 2024.
