UL Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Research - 2024

Applications are now open for the 2026 University of Limpopo (UL) Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Research. This article contains the updated eligibility requirements, application instructions, submission guidelines, and strategic information for prospective applicants.

The University of Limpopo’s Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Research form part of the institution’s broader strategy to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievement, innovation, and research impact among its teaching and research staff. The awards are administered through the Centre of Academic Excellence and aim to celebrate scholars who have made significant and sustained contributions to research, postgraduate supervision, grant acquisition, and scholarly dissemination.

The 2026 awards cycle focuses on research outputs and scholarly contributions produced during the official qualifying period from 1 August 2021 to 24 July 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically as an Electronic Portfolio of Evidence before the official submission deadline.

The prestigious Research Excellence Awards are intended to:

UL VICE-CHANCELLOR’S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE ELIGIBILITY 2026

Eligibility

Applicants must be members of the University of Limpopo teaching or research staff.
Research outputs and evidence submitted must fall within the official qualifying period of 1 August 2021 to 24 July 2026.
Permanent academic and research staff members are eligible to apply.
Contract research staff members may apply provided they are serving on a qualifying long-term contract cycle with the university.
Researchers applying under the Best Emerging Researcher category are generally expected to be early-career academics with demonstrated research potential and measurable outputs.
Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in at least one or more of the following areas:
- Publication Output
- Grant Acquisition
- Postgraduate Student Supervision
- Conference Participation and Research Dissemination

Conditions / Requirements

Apart from the above-mentioned employment and research status, the following conditions apply:

Applications must be submitted electronically as an Electronic Portfolio of Evidence.
All supporting evidence and documentation must be verifiable and relevant to the qualifying period.
Applicants are encouraged to prioritize quality and impact of research outputs over quantity.
Publications submitted should preferably be published in accredited and peer-reviewed journals indexed in recognized academic databases where applicable.
Applicants should provide evidence of successful grant acquisition, postgraduate supervision, and participation in local or international conferences where applicable.
Late or incomplete submissions may not be considered by the Awards Committee.

UL VICE-CHANCELLOR’S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS 2026

The 2026 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are administered through the Centre of Academic Excellence.
Applications must be submitted electronically in the form of an Electronic Portfolio of Evidence.
Applicants are advised to organize their portfolios according to the major evaluation pillars:

Applicants should ensure that all submitted information is accurate, complete, and supported by evidence.
The official submission deadline for the 2026 awards cycle is Friday, 24 July 2026.
The official Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, 23 October 2026.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to begin preparing their electronic portfolios early to avoid last-minute submission challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Research are assessed using multiple performance indicators designed to evaluate both research productivity and scholarly impact.
