Discovery Foundation Academic Fellowship Awards – 2026/2027
The application for the Discovery Foundation Academic Fellowship Awards for the 2026/2027 academic cycle is expected to open through the Discovery Foundation for eligible South Africans residing in South Africa.
The Discovery Foundation continues to support the development of leadership, academic excellence, and innovation in South Africa’s healthcare system through its Academic Fellowship Awards programme. Since its establishment in 2006, the Foundation has invested more than R331 million into healthcare excellence and medical education in South Africa through various grant programmes.
The Discovery Foundation Academic Fellowship is specifically aimed at supporting research-focused training in academic medicine for qualified clinical specialists pursuing doctoral-level research. The programme is administered in partnership with Tshikululu Social Investments, the official fund management and programme administration partner.
The award is intended for medical professionals pursuing advanced research and academic development in areas aligned with strengthening South Africa’s public healthcare system.

DISCOVERY FOUNDATION ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIP AWARDS APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY
- Applications are invited from recently qualified clinical (medical) specialists who wish to pursue research-focused training towards a Doctoral (PhD) degree.
- The programme is aimed at supporting clinician-scientists committed to leadership, innovation, and academic medicine within South Africa’s healthcare system.
- Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents residing in South Africa at the time of application.
- Preference may be given to applicants undertaking full-time research. However, limited clinical work in an academic setting may be acceptable.
- Consideration will only be given to applicants presenting clearly defined research projects with support from the host institution.
- Evidence must be provided showing the value and impact of the proposed research in teaching, knowledge generation, healthcare innovation, and public health improvement.
- The application process is institutionally mediated, meaning applications are submitted through the applicant’s university or academic institution.
- Research proposals aligned with strategic healthcare priorities such as Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Surgery, and Paediatric Surgery may receive stronger consideration based on recent award trends.

HOW TO APPLY FOR DISCOVERY FOUNDATION ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIP AWARDS

The Discovery Foundation Academic Fellowship provides substantial financial support towards doctoral research and academic medicine training.
- The Academic Fellowship award is valued at approximately R800,000.
- The funding supports research-focused doctoral training, including approved academic and research-related expenses.
- Recipients are expected to contribute to leadership and innovation within South Africa’s healthcare system.
- Successful fellows are required to complete a minimum of two years of public service in South Africa following completion of their studies or training.
