Poor Performance in Schools

Education like we always say is the best legacy. For this reason, a lot of people, especially parents, go out of their way to give their wards the best education with the expectation of a good performance. Sometimes, these expectations are not always met because the student may end up performing poorly in school.

Oftentimes, it is not the intention of the student to perform badly in school.

When a student is performing poorly at school, it simply means the student is having trouble in school, either with a subject or with every class, thus affecting their grades in school.

There are several causes leading to poor academic performance in school. We will be identifying such factors in this article.

Delving quickly, below are the causes of poor performance in school:

LIST OF FACTORS THAT CAUSES POOR PERFORMANCE IN SCHOOLS

1. Bullying

In no particular order, bullying has been identified as one of the most common causes of poor performance in school.

This menace is not only peculiar to a particular location, but it’s become a worldwide problem. While a good number of students have lost their lives to this, others are having hard times concentrating on studies, hence the poor performance.

2. Learning Disorder

A lot of times, students perform poorly in school not for any fault of theirs but because of a learning disorder. It takes an observant teacher or parents to notice this in their wards.

Where they are not sensitive enough to understand this, the student is blamed and probably humiliated for always performing poorly. In many cases, the child may end up having low self-esteem or probably falling into depression.

A common learning disability is dyslexia which is trouble with reading and writing. It takes special care from teachers, parents and the effort of counselors to get such students out of this condition.

So, when a student performs poorly, it’s possible they are having a health disorder.

3. Slothfulness

Do you know that there are students who are naturally lazy when it comes to school work?

Yes! They exist.

Some students are so lazy and sluggish to devote proper time to their studies. They have every opportunity to study without distractions but instead they prefer to while away time, playing and sleeping always.

These sets of students usually end up rushing to study at the last minutes of their examinations or tests. Nomatter how smart such students are in cramming, it doesn’t always end well.

4. Inadequate Study Time

As seen above, some students are just naturally lazy to study. On the other hand, there are students who are eager to study but do not have ample time. It’s either they are running one errand or doing one chore or the other.

Fact is, no student can perform well in school without burning the midnight candle. As hard as it sounds, there is absolutely no shortcut to success. A student must painstakingly study to excel.

There is absolutely no way a student will not perform badly in school without having enough time to study.

5. Improper Timetable

The importance of timetables can not be overemphasized. It helps students to plan every aspect of their reading. It helps students to prioritize their reading and also manage time effectively.

During our time, having a timetable was as important as having a textbook. We couldn’t do anything without a timetable. In recent times not too many students study with a timetable. Any student without a proper timetable or workable timetable is obviously towing the path of failure. It is sad that many students do not have timetables at all. They have no direction in life. This often results in outright failure or average performance.

On the part of schools, they are also lagging in this aspect. Every now and then, students are made to carry all of their books to school. This is what following a simple timetable would have solved.

6. Financial Constraint

Well, so understand there are individuals who came from very poor homes but still performed excellently in school. Not everyone is that determined to succeed in unfavorable conditions.

As easy as surviving in school without enough money may sound, it is difficult. Imagine not being able to purchase a very important textbook due to lack of money.

Financial constraint is one of the factors inhibiting students’ performance in their studies. It often results in an average performance.

7. Lack of Study Materials

There are reasons why a student may lack study materials. One of which is lack of finance. In other cases, it may be due to nonchalance from either the student or the school.

Whatever may be the case, unavailability of study materials certainly affects students’ performance drastically.

8. Broken Home

One may want to argue this but a broken home is a potential factor for the poor performance of students in school.

Except you have experienced this, you might not really understand the effect on the children. Broken home could lead to depression, thus affecting the student psychologically.

In the same vein, other family related factors like moving to a new house or the death of a loved one may also contribute to poor performance at school.

9. Discouragement

As parents and guardians, how often do you encourage your kids to do better? Some guardians are so fond of scolding a child when they do not perform up to expectation. That’s when you hear, “is it not your age group that make all A’s?”, “You’re no good”, etc.

When a student who puts in their best but hears this all the time, it begins to affect them. They even start to even doubt their capability.

Students who are discouraged are bound to fail. When doubts and discouragement set in, then students will certainly be in despair which will greatly obstruct progress in life and confines one to average performance and failure.

This will often lead to failure or poor performance in the lives of students.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD WITH SCHOOL OR IMPROVE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

Having seen the possible causes of poor performance in school, it is not the end of the road for such students. If proper measures are applied, the performance of a student could improve.

Thus, here are things that can be done to help improve the school’s performance of a student or your child.

1. Have a good rapport with your children

Many parents do not have a good relationship with their children. Because of this, it is difficult to tell when a child is having difficulties at school.

By building a good relationship, you will have your child tell you about school every day. Ask your child how school went. From such conversations, you will be able to tell when a child is having challenges at school.

Also, as a parent, going to parent-teacher meetings will also give you the opportunity to meet and speak with your child’s teachers and know areas your ward is lagging. You will get information about how your child is doing in each class. You can talk about possible solutions to any problems your child may be having.

2. Create a Daily Homework Routine

Set a regular time for homework. Your child may have an easier time finishing an assignment if it is broken down into small steps. He or she may also need to study for short periods at a time if concentration is difficult.

3. Hire a tutor to work with your child if needed.

Although this is good, many parents do this for selfish reasons.

However, where your child is performing poorly in school, your child may need more time and attention than a teacher can give during the day at school. At this point, a home tutor can help your child to understand better.

4. Make Sure Your Child Gets Enough Sleep Every Night

The importance of sleep in the life of a student is overrated. But the fact is that sleep can help your child concentrate in school. Set a bedtime for your child to follow.

5. Limit Your Child (ren)’s Screen Time

Screen time is the amount of television, computer, smart phone, and video game time your child is exposed to each day. It is important to limit screen time. This helps your child get enough sleep, physical activity, and social interaction each day.

6. Enhance Their Feeding and Nutrition

Offer your child a variety of healthy foods. Healthy foods include fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy products, whole-grain breads, and cooked beans.

Make sure your child has breakfast before school, and a packed lunch or money for lunch. Your child may also need a healthy snack during the day. You might be wondering what all these have to do with boosting performance but it certainly has everything to do with it.

7. Encouragement is need

Lastly, encourage your child for even the little efforts they put in. Praises and gifts promised have a way of challenging a child to do better. Again, avoid comparing your child with other children. It kills self esteem.

A student who is performing badly at school can always top the class if the root cause of the problem is discovered and handled effectively.
