High school, which is known as secondary school in some parts of the world, is the last phase of education before University, otherwise known as college in many countries. High school comprises students between the ages of 14 -18 years or more as the case may be. Often times, due to some reasons, not all individuals are capable of furthering their education after graduation from high school. As a result of this, many students take to securing a job instead. However, it is possible for those with only high school certificate to find work in a variety of industries, but most are limited to lower-level positions with not much room for career growth.

1. Customer Service Representatives
On the list of careers for high school students is Customer service representative. They work in call centers with their major responsibilities being to respond to and resolve customer inquiries and complaints. Though depending on the organization, job descriptions may differ.
2. Certified Nursing Assistant
Another career on the list is nursing assistant. The responsibilities of certified nursing assistants (CNAs) involve helping patients with tasks such as bathing, eating, dressing, walking, etc. More experienced professionals may get involved in advanced activities such as taking a patient’s temperature and checking blood pressures. In addition to clinical training, state certification requirements must be met. With the rate at which elderly population is increasing, there would be demand for more CNAs over the years.
3. Office Managers
Office managers are responsible for the effective and smooth running of day-to-day office operations. Specific job tasks may include distributing work assignments and overseeing employees.
As a high school student, this career option is worth venturing into.
4. Administrative Assistant
This position is similar to that of office managers. Thus, like office managers, administrative assistants see to the smooth operations of organizations. Job responsibilities may include planning and scheduling meetings, answering phones, organizing paperwork, and projects management.
Some administrative assistants work from home, and they’re known as virtual assistants.
5. Cashier
Cashiers are responsible for recording and receiving customer payments from the sale of goods and services. Forms of payment may include cash, checks and debit, credit and gift cards. The need for cashiers was anticipated to decrease due to the availability of online shopping and in-store advancements.
6. Bank Teller
These sets of career people work in banks. Bank tellers process customer transactions which may include, cashing checks, withdrawal and deposits and lots more. As a high school students, with an on -the- job training you’re good to go.
7. Sales Representative
This is a common job for high school students. A sales representative also referred to as a sales executive, is a person who is not only involved in the selling to consumers, but also sells goods and services to other businesses, government agencies and lots more.
This is an important role in every organization. In other words, sales representatives are often key personnel when it comes to building a business.
In some cases, some businesses prefer or require a person with a college degree, but many won’t because the major thing employers look out for is level of expertise in selling.
8. Optician
Often times, people misplace the job of an optician for that of an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Opticians are responsible for fitting people with glasses or contact lenses after their visit to an ophthalmologist.
While a high school student can choose to build a career here, in some cases you need a certificate from a technical school or community college. In other cases, a high school diploma or equivalent will do just fine for this career.
As an optician, you are likely to work in a store that sells eyewear or directly with an eye doctor.
9. Electrician
This is not a career for just anybody. They do all forms electrical works. They also install and repair electrical power and other systems in offices, factories and homes.
An electrician can also get involved in designing and maintaining equipment and electrical systems of businesses and factories, or that of residences.
This job can be dangerous and risky and as such requires an extensive training as an apprentice. Training on the job can happen on the job or at a technical school.
10. Phar-macy Technician
Do you know that you don’t necessarily need to study phar-macy in school before doing this? To be on a safer side you can decide to learn from a phar-macist as an apprentice but this isn’t a job for the absent-minded.
This is a job in which you’ll measure, count, mix and label medicine. As a phar-macy technician there will always be a pharmacist overseeing things. This career is for somebody who likes helping people get healthy. It is also a perfect career for people who enjoy interacting with members of the public on a daily basis.
11. Restaurant Cook
Cooking might be fun to those who derive joy in doing so but to others, it is not so fun at all. Without cooks, a restaurant can crash. They are involved in every kitchen activity ranging from cooking, blanching, garnishing, grilling, frying and all that is involved in cooking.
It’s a job in which anyone who loves to cook can venture into. It doesn’t necessarily require you to get a college degree. However, you need to know a lot about food if you’re going to do well in this career. With this and a little formal training, you will certainly do well.
12. Plumbing
This is a very lucrative career. Plumbers are responsible for assembling, installing and repairing pipes in buildings of various types. A lot of people look down on plumbers due to the nature of the job, but what a lot of people do not understand is that plumbing has advanced from that dirty job to a more corporate career with experts in the field.
In many cases, plumbers must be licensed to work independently. Hence, as a high school student, this is one lucrative career option to consider.
13. Waiter and Waitress
While many may not consider this as a worthwhile career, there are many who have achieved a lot from this.
As a waiter/ waitress, you are saddled with the responsibility of tending to customers who visit the restaurant to unwind after a long and busy day. In choosing this career path, you must understand its demanding nature. Doing this will enable you to prepare your mind for eventualities. In other words, there are days you will either come across ill-mannered customers as well as those who may not drop tips.
This job description involves a lot of responsibilities which ranges from distributing menus, fetching drinks, taking orders, accepting checks, etc.
On a very good day, this job is very lucrative as they are handsomely rewarded by customers who were given first class customer service.
14. Exterminator
Have you ever being horrified to your marrows for coming in contact with pests and rodents in your home? If you have ever had such experience, I’m certain I won’t be wrong to refer to exterminators as your knight in shining armor.
Exterminators are experts who get rid of those little creatures terrorizing your living environment. From bed bugs on the sofa to rats in the wardrobes, exterminators are trained to get rid or at least control them.
They achieve this by inspecting affected homes and buildings in order to know the best measures, tools and chemicals to use. So, if you’re courageous enough to handle rodents and pests, this is a career to consider irrespective of your qualification.
15. Insurance Sales Agent
Insurance is a very crucial and regulated field though a lot of individuals still take it for granted. However, insurance agents are licensed individuals who are in charge of selling life, auto, health and home insurance.
Although many insurance agents are college graduates, it is a job that’s mostly open to high school graduates.
This career is a perfect fit for individuals who are good communicators and analytical in nature. Breaking into this field is usually a tough one but once you successfully do, you’re mostly likely to thrive.
16. Physical/ Massage Therapist
Physical therapists help patients who are recovering from injury or illness to regain movement and manage pain.
They do this by using touch to manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. They use their hands, fingers, forearms, elbows, and sometimes feet to knead muscles and soft tissues of the body. This helps relieve pain, help heal injuries, improve circulation, and relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients.
The type of massage given typically depends on the client’s needs and physical condition.
17. Graphic Designing
Graphics designing is a career that has come to stay regardless of qualification and as such, it is one of the careers in high-demand.
Communication is highly effective when business objectives meet visual aesthetics accordingly. Graphic design is used to persuade its target audience to care about the design in front of the brand.
Due to the rise of the internet and technology, new businesses are springing up every day and that is why the need for eye-catching graphics has become very essential to many businesses.
This is why there’s an ever growing demand for graphics designers. As a graphics designer, most of your jobs will include logo, website creation, animation, flyers, product illustration etc. High school student or not, this career is a win if you are open to learning.
18. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installers
Due to the increasing rate of global warming, scientists identified generation of power from burning of fossil fuels as one of the major causes and in order to control this, solar has been identified as another harmless means of naturally generating clean power. Solar PV installers are experts who assemble, set up, and maintain rooftop or other systems that convert sunlight into energy. It is mostly an outdoor job and most times requires travelling from one location to the other.
With a high school diploma and some courses which can be taken at a technical school or community college, you can successfully become a professional, although some companies offer on-the-job training.
With the rate at which people are switching to solar generated power, these professionals have come to stay.
19. Writers
The writing industry has experienced a massive growth over the years and a lot of individuals have carved a niche for themselves in this field. These days, anybody can because writer irrespective of qualification. Amazingly, mostly experts in writing never studied it in school.
This career is so vast as there are different aspects of writing ranging from Academic, copywriting, content writing, ghost writing, technical writing, etc. On a daily basis companies and individuals are on the lookout for writers.
For technical writing, there are thousands of people who have technical challenges seeking solutions. Penning down your knowledge and publishing it is a sure career path.
The responsibilities of a technical writer are numerous. A technical writer is responsible for turning technical and complicated information into simpler instructions. They create how-to manuals, assembling instructions and operation guides for consumers as well as for the support staff within businesses.
More so, technical writers are required in many industries. Your duties include producing descriptions or instructions to help people understand how to use a product or service. To do well in this career path, you need relevant experience in writing in order to convey your thoughts clearly.
Copywriting is another aspect of writing in high demand. A copywriter’s main duty is to create scripts, ad copy and words to fill out the pages for websites to generate leads for their clients. Copywriters often discuss with the client their core ideas and target.
Copywriters are highly sought after in any firm. They are experts when it comes to understanding human psychology. The knowledge of this helps them to work on the minds of their prospects when writing a sales copy.
20. Flight Attendant
The job of flight attendants is to make passengers comfortable and happy. They are the first to be called upon by passengers in case of any problem.
Flight attendants are well paid but this may not be commensurate with the troubles they face in the hands of difficult passengers. As a high school graduate, this career gives you some level of exposure while touring the world.
21. Truck Driving
Hey, don’t get it twist. Even college graduates have embraced driving as a full time career. One thing you should know is that thousands of individuals are willing to pay for your services. What matters is that they get to their destination comfortably.
That’s what driving as a career entails.
However, Truck drivers transport goods from one place to another, but some may also be required to take on sales responsibilities. Such duties may include finding new customers to deliver goods to. As a high school student, you might consider enrolling for driving lessons if you do not have driving experience.
