Requirements & Eligibility

Professor (Entomology focus)

  • PhD in Entomology or closely related field (strong entomology focus).
  • Extensive undergraduate & postgraduate teaching experience in entomology.
  • Able to teach across topics such as general entomology, ecophysiology, insect diversity, insect form & function, apiculture, forensic entomology, parasitology, medical/veterinary entomology, conservation, pest management, entomological biocontrol.
  • Active research record in general or applied entomology.
  • Supervision to completion of M and PhD students.
  • International profile in the discipline; track record of publications and of attracting research funding.
  • Evidence of administration/management/leadership roles.

Associate Professor (Entomology focus)

  • PhD in Entomology or closely related field (strong entomology focus).
  • Considerable undergraduate & postgraduate teaching experience in entomology (same topic range as above).
  • Research experience (general/applied entomology).
  • Supervision to completion of M and PhD students.
  • National and emerging international profile.
  • Publications and evidence of attracting funding.
  • Administration/management/leadership experience.

Senior Lecturer (Entomology focus)

  • PhD in Entomology or closely related field (strong entomology focus).
  • Required teaching experience at undergraduate & postgraduate levels (same topic range).
  • Research experience (general/applied entomology).
  • Supervision of at least Master’s students (to completion).
  • Emerging national profile.
  • Publications and evidence of attracting funding.
  • Administration/management/leadership experience.

Possible salary (per annum)
  • Professor (Grade P)
    • Basic pensionable salary: R 1,146,695
    • Cost to Company (approx.): R 1,465,125
  • Associate Professor (Grade AP)
    • Basic pensionable salary: R 936,120
    • Cost to Company (approx.): R 1,203,447
  • Senior Lecturer (Grade SL)

    • Basic pensionable salary: R 783,243
    • Cost to Company (approx.): R 1,013,469

Deadline & important dates
  • Closing date: 17 October 2025 (advert may close earlier if many applications received — apply early).
  • Short-listing meeting: TBC (2025).
  • Selection process: assessment/presentation and interview for shortlisted candidates (dates to be advised).
  • If you are not contacted within 30 days after the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.

HOW TO APPLY FOR RHODES UNIVERSITY JOBS

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING::

  1. A position becomes vacant at Rhodes University:  A position becomes available, which Rhodes University decide to fill either internally or externally.
  2. The position is advertised: The job is advertised on Rhodes University careers portal, internal notice boards. A closing date is also indicated on the advert(s).
  3. A shortlist is created: Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are shortlisted by HR and the line manager. Depending on the number of shortlisted candidates, applicants may be required to do assessments or are invited for an interview.
  4. Shortlisted applicants are invited to an interview: The line manager, team member and HR are present at the interview. Depending on the outcome of the interviews, it’s possible to select the best applicants based on their interview and CV.  If there is a “tie” between candidates, further interviews or assessments can be requested.
  5. The position is filled: The best candidate for the job is selected. We make an offer. The applicant then either accepts or declines the offer.
