    Visas are not required by citizens of the following countries for the periods and subject to the conditions indicated. These citizens must hold national passports or emergency travel certificates of the countries concerned. Holders of travel documents other than passports or emergency travel certificates are not included in the exemptions and must be in possession of visas to enter the Republic of South Africa. 1. Holders of passports of: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, including the British Islands, Ballwick of Guernsey, Isle of Mann and Virgin Islands,The Republic of Ireland. 2. Holders of passports of the following countries in respect of bona fide holiday and business visits only (period unspecified) and transits: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands (Kingdom of the) New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States ofAmerica <p> An unspecified exemption implies that in practice a temporary residence permit exceeding a period of 90 days may be issued on arrival as long as the visit is of a bona fide nature. 3. Holders of passports of the following countries in respect of bona fide holiday and business visits not exceeding 90 days and transits: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Israel, Malta, Paraguay, St Helena, Uruguay, Venezuela 4. Holders of passports of the following countries in respect of bona fide holiday and business visits not exceeding 30 days and transits: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Botswana, Cape Verde, Comores, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Egypt, Hong Kong*, Hungary, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Namibia, Peru, Republic of Gabon, Senegal, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovak, South Korea, Swaziland, Thailand, Turkey, Zimbabwe (Government officials only) *This exemption is only with regard to holders of Hong Kong British National Overseas (BNO) passports, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passports and Hong Kong Certificates of Identity. <p> 5. These arrangements are not applicable to individuals whose visa exemptions have been withdrawn. In all cases the normal entry requirements still have to be complied with before admission is gained. 6. All persons wishing to enter the Republic of South Africa: with the intention of taking up employment/studies; to participate in any sports event; to take up permanent residence/re-entry are required to obtain the necessary permits before proceeding to South Africa. Application forms can be obtained from any South African representative abroad.
