For admission into programmes of study at any South African higher education institution for any first degree or second degree, an applicant must have the following requirements and grades:.

HIGHER EDUCATION ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR 2024 IN SOUTH AFRICA

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR’S DEGREE

You will need a National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV)

Subject to institutional admission requirements, the minimum admission requirement for a Bachelor’s degree programme is a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 issued by Council for General and Further Education and Training. The minimum legislative requirements for admission to a Bachelors degree include the achievement of:

  • Three (3) fundamental subjects between 60 and 69% (3) (including English as the language of learning and teaching at Wits)
  • Three (3) vocational subjects from the designated list between 70 and 79%.

South Africa’s institutional requirements are that applicants who hold an NCV may be invited to write a test, provided that he/she has met the following compulsory institutional requirements as well as the Faculty and degree-specific requirements. An applicant must have:

  • Taken English as either the Language of Learning and Teaching or as the First Additional language
  • Taken Mathematics as a Fundamental Component
  • Achieved 70–79% (4) for all seven subjects—in fundamental and vocational categories.

In the case of an international student:

  • A full or foreign conditional exemption certificate is a prerequisite for enrolment for undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria in the case of non-South African citizens and students who do not have a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) or an Independent Examination Board (IEB) qualification.

Documents required for undergraduate, certificate & diploma programmes involve:

  • Certified transcripts of all official academic records stating all subject examinations passed and marks received.
  • copy of your passport, birth certificate or any other valid ID proof
  • Senior Certificate Copy
  • Entrance exam results or certificates

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA 

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree  OR
  • Attained a level of competence
  • Some schools and colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF  (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.

Duration

  • A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of Senate, all modules shall be completed at the University.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR OF HONOURS

Bachelor of Honours Degrees Requirements

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

Duration

  • A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of Senate, all modules shall be completed at the University.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTERS DEGREE

Masters by Coursework and Masters by Research Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

Duration Coursework

  • A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full-time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
  • With permission and in terms of College regulations, periods of attendance at the graduate level at another institution or in another College may be accepted. (Consult with relevant school.).

Research

  • A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full-time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.

Research

  • Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate programme of research on a subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the University. Students must also adhere to possible other conditions prescribed by colleges and schools.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCTORATE DEGREES

Doctor of philosophy or supervised Doctor degrees by research 

Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree

Duration

  • A minimum of four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.

Curriculum

  • Students will be required to pursue an approved programme of research on a subject falling within the scope of studies at the University. Such a programme shall make a distinct contribution to the knowledge or understanding of the subject and afford evidence of originality shown either by the discovery of new facts or by the exercise of independent critical power. Students must also adhere to other possible conditions prescribed by colleges and schools.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR MASTERS, POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA AND DOCTORATE COURSES

  • Academic Transcripts: Bachelor or honours degrees records and marks obtained.
  • A copy of your passport, birth certificate or any other valid ID proof
  • Research Proposal (For PhD Studies): This document should include topic/research area, literature review, contribution to the study, research methodology and potential unit of analysis, list of references, and personal motivation to opt for this particular research topic.
  • Curriculum Vitae: The CV must include your basic information, educational background, academic projects that highlight your publications, research or internships, experience, honours and awards, interests, community work or extra-curricular activities, and academic referees (at least 2). It should be clear, concise and consistent.
  • Letter of Motivation: The motivation letter should disclose the focus and understanding power about the chosen field of study. You should elaborate on specific skills, accomplishments and motivations that make you suited for the course of study you’re applying for, and should answer questions like
