Diploma in Education (Secondary)

1. General Admission Requirements
To be eligible  for admission  into the Diploma in Education  (Secondary)  programme,  a candidate should satisfy the following minimum entry requirements.
  • COSC with three [3] credits and two [2] passed subjects must include English Language OR
  • LGCSE with symbol C or better in three [3] subjects and symbol E or better in two [2] The passed subjects must include English Language. OR
  • A certificate of a relevant qualification from a recognized institution
2. Admission into subjects of specialization
  • To be eligible for admission into a subject of specialization, a student must have obtained a pass 7 or better at COSC, or symbol D or better at LGCSE in the chosen subject(s) of specialization.
3.  Subject specific admission requirements – Diploma in Education (Secondary)
3.1.  Department of Social Sciences
a)      History
  • COSC: At least a pass 7 or better in Development Studies or History; or a minimum of symbol C or better in History at JC level OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol C or better in Development Studies or History; or a minimum of a symbol D or better in History at JC level
b)      Development Studies
  • COSC: At least a pass (7) or better in Development Studies or Geography or History
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol C or better in Development studies or a minimum of a symbol C in Development Studies, Geography or History
c)      Commercial Studies
  • COSC: At least a pass (7) or better in either Accounting or Commerce and a pass in Mathematics OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in Accounting, Commerce or Business Studies or Economics and a pass in Mathematics
d)      Religious Education
  • COSC: At least a pass (7) or better in Religious Studies, Religious Knowledge or Bible Studies OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in Religious Studies
e)      Geography
  • COSC: At least a pass (7) or better in either Geography or Development Studies
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in Geography or Development studies.
Please note: A candidate who wishes to specialize in Geography and a science subject such as Physics, for example, must have passed Geography at COSC or LGCSE level.

3.2. Department of Languages and Literature
a)      English
  • COSC: At least a pass 7 in English Language or Literature in English OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D in English Language or Literature in English.
b)      Sesotho
  • COSC: At least a pass 7 or better in Sesotho OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in Sesotho
3.3.   Department of Pure Sciences
  • COSC: At least a pass seven (7) or better in each of the two (2) subjects of specialisation plus a pass in Mathematics OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol C or better in each of the two (2) subjects of specialisation plus a pass in Mathematics
3.4. Department of Applied Sciences
a) Home Economics
  • COSC: At least a pass seven [7] or better in either Fashion and Fabrics or Food and Nutrition or Home Management or a pass in any science OR
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in either Fashion and Textiles or Food and Nutrition or a pass in any Science subject. OR
  • Certificate in Home Economics from a recognised institution. OR
  • Secondary Teachers Certificate specialising in Home
b)Agriculture
  1. COSC: At least a pass seven [7] or better in either Agriculture or any of the Science subjects (which include Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics). A pass in Mathematics will be an added advantage
  2. LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in either Agriculture or any of the Science subjects. A minimum of symbol E in Mathematics will be an added advantage.
OR
  • COSC: At least a pass seven [7] or better in any Science subject (which include Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics) plus a symbol C or better in Agriculture at Junior Certificate (J.C.) A pass in Mathematics will be an added advantage.
  • LGCSE: At least a symbol D or better in any Science subject plus a symbol C or better in Agriculture at Junior Certificate (J.C.) level. A minimum of symbol E in Mathematics will be an added advantage.
OR
  • Certificate in Agriculture from a recognised

OR
  • Secondary Teachers Certificate specialising in Agriculture.
c)  Technology To be eligible for admission into the Diploma in Education Secondary (Technology) A candidate should have one of the following:
  1. COSC with three (3) credits and two (2) Woodwork / Technical Drawing or Design and Technology must be one of the credits. Mathematics and Science must be a pass or better.
OR
  1. COSC with three (3) credits and two (2) passes plus Symbol C or better in Woodwork / Technical Drawing or Basic handcrafts at JC Mathematics and Science must be a pass or better
OR
  1. LGCSE with a symbol C or better in three (3) subjects and two (2) Design & Technology must be a C or better. Mathematics and Science must be symbols E or better.
OR
  1. National Craft Certificate (NCC), from a recognised institution, consisting of one or more of the following: Electronics, Electrical Installation, Plumbing & Sheet- Metal, Building Technology, Fitting & Turning, Carpentry & Joinery, Welding, Automotive Technology, Plastic Technology

Diploma in Education (Primary)

To be eligible for admission to the Diploma in Education (Primary) programme, a candidate should satisfy the following minimum requirements.
  • COSC with three [3] credits and two [2] The passed subjects must include English Language. OR
  • LGCSE with symbol C or better in three [3] subjects and symbol D or E in two [2] The passed subjects must include English Language.
  • Recognized equivalent certificates shall be CONSIDERED
  • A pass in Mathematics and Science[8 or better in COSC, E or better in LGCSE] will be an added advantage.

Certificate in Early Childhood Education

To be considered for admission, an applicant must meet the following minimum requirements:
1. Experience
At least three (3) years of continuous experience working as one or more of the following:
  1. A pre-school teacher in a school recognised by the Ministry of Education and Training
  2. A District Teacher Trainer (DTT)
  3. An Area Resource Teacher (ART)
2. Educational Requirements
  • At least a pass in one subject at COSC/LGCSE level OR
  • A Second Class pass at JC level OR
  • Recognised equivalent certificates shall be considered
Please note that all applicants are required to be working in a recognised school or IECCD centre when they apply and they must continue to be working during their training. Proof that an applicant is working in a recognised school or centre shall be required.
