Bursary Amount:

  • MSc: ZAR 115,000 + academic fees

Note: The bursary amount is directly paid to the student, while academic fees are paid to the host institution upon invoice submission.

Additional Considerations:

  • MSc or PhD applicants who might not complete their studies in the stipulated time can be evaluated for a one-year project development internship. Successful interns must re-apply for the bursary the subsequent year.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should be proactive, enthusiastic, and dedicated to exceptional research.
  • Only South African citizens studying at South African universities are eligible.
  • Priorities align with national equity targets and research landscape diversification. Candidates from historically disadvantaged or new public higher education institutions are particularly encouraged.
  • Applicants must secure their position at a university independently; bursary approval depends on this.
  • Project running expenses are separate from the bursary and depend on the specific project. However, funding might be considered for part-time studies or other projects if they strongly resonate with SANBI’s mandate.
