We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024 SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pelagic Ecosystem Classification is now open.
The Marine Programme at SANBI beckons passionate researchers to delve into the ocean’s mysteries. The fellowship on offer seeks a dedicated postdoctoral fellow eager to lead the effort in updating the classification and mapping of pelagic ecosystems for South Africa’s maritime territory. This venture will cement the integration of this research into the national Marine Ecosystem Map, a milestone for South Africa’s National Biodiversity Assessment.
SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pelagic Ecosystem Eligibility
Educational Background:
- Completed a PhD within the last five years or will receive a PhD in 2023.
Skills and Experience:
- Possess knowledge in marine biodiversity and/or oceanography.
- Demonstrate strong analytical and data management capabilities.
- Experience in spatial analyses is favorable.
- Proficiency in analytical programming languages like R or Python is ideal.
- Past endeavors in distribution modeling or mapping biodiversity/oceanographic variability at regional scales are a plus.
- Existing connections with South African marine science institutions and a record of publishing in credible journals will be beneficial.
Research Focus:
The selected candidate will:
- Concentrate on the bioregional classification of both surface and subsurface pelagic ecosystems in South Africa.
- Collaborate closely with the SANBI Marine Programme team.
- Support the incorporation of their research into the national Marine Ecosystem Map, with a projected delivery in March 2025.
Bursary Details:
- Fellowship value: R 300,000 annually for 18 months (Total R450,000).
- Expected commencement: Sometime in the latter half of 2023.
- Additional allowances for travel and other expenses amounting to R 100,000.
- The candidate will be hosted at the University of Cape Town and will collaborate with Dr. Natasha Karenyi (UCT) and Dr. Jock Currie (SANBI).
