WITS BUSINESS SCHOOL ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Master of Business Administration Entry Requirements

  • 4 year degree (NQF 8) OR 3 year degree plus PG-Dip (NQF 8)
  • Post-university work experience: A minimum of 4 years for the programme
  • Acceptable GMAT, NMAT score OR the WBS Admission Test.
  • Mathematics: A level of competence equivalent to the requirements of the SA Matriculation certificate

  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) candidates are required to write the NMAT test. 
Note: WBS Admission Test

Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to write the WBS Admissions test.

Applicants are requested to read the following information with care. Tests are used in the selection process because research shows a correlation between success in the tests and success in the programmes. However, the test results form only a part of the criteria for candidate selection.

Applicants for the MBA may sit one of three admissions tests.  The GMAT, NMAT or WBS Admission Test.  Applicants are advised to take the WBS Admission Test unless they wish to apply  to multiple business schools, in which case they should take the GMAT or NMAT (details of these tests may be found on www.gmat.com or nmat.org.in/africa).  Applicants are advised that both the GMAT and the NMAT require extensive preparation, whereas the WBS Admission Test does not.

Masters of Management Entry Requirements

MM in Finance and Investment

  • 4-year degree/diploma NQF8 with a major in one of the following: Economics, Mathematics, Finance, Business Studies, Engineering or Law (with evidence of strong numeracy at 65%  and above)
  • Work experience is an advantage but not a requirement
  • Letter of motivation
  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • SAQA evaluation certificate (for students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • non-refundable application fee of R200
  • View and complete the Management Part 3 form

MM in the Field of Business Executive Coaching

  • Honours degree or post-graduate diploma (in exceptional circumstances, applicants with a bachelor’s degree and ten years’ relevant experience will be considered)
  • At least five years’ relevant working experience
  • Letter of motivation
  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificate(s)
  • SAQA evaluation certificate (for students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • non-refundable application fee of R200
  • View and complete the Management Part 3 form

MM in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation

  • First degree and post-graduate studies (preferably an honours degree but a first-class Bachelor’s degree with a recognised and accredited post-graduate degree or diploma is also recognised)
  • Post-university entrepreneurial, corporate or informal business experience is an advantage but not a requirement
  • Mathematics and English: a level of above-average competence equivalent to the requirements for the SA matriculation certificate
  • CV (only required if you have been working for 2 or more years)
  • Motivation letter
  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • SAQA evaluation certificate (for students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • Non-refundable application fee

Master of Management by Research

  • A bachelor’s degree with honours (1st grade or upper 2nd grade)
  • An outline of your proposed research (2 000 to 3 000 words)
  • Availability of a suitable supervisor
  • High level of motivation and commitment
  • Letter of motivation
  • CV
  • A 12-page proposal
  • Certified academic certificates (undergraduate and Honours degrees)
  • Certified academic transcripts and records (undergraduate and honours degree)
  • SAQA evaluation certificate (for students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • Non-refundable application fee

MM in the Field of Strategic Marketing

  • 4-year degree/diploma NQF8 in marketing, honours degree or equivalent qualification with overall average of 60% or better
  • 2 to 4 years work experience
  • Motivation letter
  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • SAQA evaluation certificate (for students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • Non-refundable application fee
  • Candidates may also be required to attend an interview with WBS

Master of Management in the Field of Innovation Studies

  • First degree and post-graduate studies (preferably an honours degree but a first-class Bachelor’s degree with a recognised and accredited post-graduate degree or diploma is also recognised)
  • Post-university entrepreneurial, corporate or informal business experience is an advantage but not a requirement
  • Mathematics and English: a level of above-average competence equivalent to the requirements for the SA matriculation certificate
  • Evidence of post-secondary quantitative ability is strongly desired
  • CV

  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • SAQA evaluation certificate (for students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • Non-refundable application fee

MM in the field of Energy Leadership

  • First degree and postgraduate (NQF 8) studies (preferably an Honours degree but a good Bachelor’s degree with a recognised and accredited postgraduate degree or diploma is also recognised). In certain cases, recognition of prior learning may be granted.
  • Mathematics and English—a level of above-average competence equivalent to the requirements for the South African Matriculation certificate.
  • Three to five years’ appropriate work experience. If the applicant seeks exemption from this requirement, a letter of motivation must accompany the application.
  • Candidates may also be required to attend an interview with WBS.

Master of Management in the field of Digital Business

  • First degree and postgraduate (NQF 8) studies (preferably an Honours degree but a good Bachelor’s degree with a recognised and accredited postgraduate degree or diploma is also recognised). Recognition of prior learning will be considered.
  • Candidates may be required to write an APIL test.
  • You will need to complete and achieve an acceptable level in the Wits University APIL test. For the APIL test, please book via email at testbookings.wbs@wits.ac.za
  • Three to five years’ work experience. If the applicant seeks exemption from this requirement, a letter of motivation must be included.
  • Candidates may also be required to attend an interview with WBS.
  • Applicants who fall outside of the normal admissions process but who demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university that they have experiential- or work-based learning which has taken the learner to an equivalent level of a qualification specified above (under Entry Requirements), may be considered for admission on the basis of recognition of prior accredited and/or prior experiential learning.

PhD Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree with honours—upper 2nd class or better (i.e. both with an average of “B” or better)
    OR a Bachelor’s degree plus a postgraduate Diploma (both with an average of “B” or better)
  • A good master’s degree (i.e. an average of “B” or better)
  • An outline of your proposed research.
  • Availability of a suitable supervisor
  • A non-refundable application fee
  • Complete Part 3 form WBS PhD Application, Part 3 form
  • Motivation letter
  • CV
  • A 12-page proposal
  • Certified academic transcripts and records: undergraduate, honours, and master’s degrees
  • Certified academic certificates: undergraduate, Honours and Masters Degree

Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7)
  • Two years’ minimum work experience
  • Mathematics: a level of competence equivalent to SA matriculation certificate
  • Acceptable GMAT, NMAT score OR WBS Admissions test. (Please note: only shortlisted candidates will be invited to write the WBS Admission test.)
  • SAQA Evaluation (International qualifications only) prior to application.
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)

In exceptional cases, non-degreed individuals with working experience are considered.

Postgraduate Diploma in Management Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7)
  • Limited working experience is an advantage but not a requirement
  • Mathematics: a level of competence equivalent to the requirements of the SA matriculation certificate; a minimum of 55% for Mathematics or 70% for Mathematical Literacy
  • In exceptional cases, non-degreed individuals with working experience are considered
  • Acceptable scores for the WBS admission test
  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificate(s)
  • Copy of SAQA certificate for foreign qualifications
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  • non-refundable application fee of R200
  • View and complete the Management Part 3 form
  • Letter of motivation

Postgraduate Diploma in the field of Energy Leadership

  1. Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7). In exceptional cases, non-degreed individuals with working experience are considered.
  2. Mathematics and English—a level of above-average competence equivalent to the requirements for the SA matriculation certificate.
  3. Two years’ appropriate work experience. In certain cases, exceptions are considered.
  4. Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)
  5. Candidates may also be required to attend an interview with WBS.

Postgraduate Diploma in Management in the field of Digital Business

  • A three-year degree or national higher diploma at NQF 7 level, or an equivalent university approved qualification with an aggregated 60% as a minimum. Recognition of prior learning may be considered.
  • At least two years of professional organisational experience appropriate to lower to middle-level management.
  • Mathematics and English—a level of above-average competence equivalent to the requirements for the South African Matriculation certificate.
  • Candidates may also be required to attend an interview with WBS.
