The Council for Geoscience invites applications from passionate candidates for their Technical Services Internship Programme. This program is a stepping stone for those who wish to delve deeper into the world of geoscience and make meaningful contributions to the industry.

The Council for Geoscience, South Africa’s national geoscience agency, is offering a 24-month fixed-term contract for four positions in the Technical Services Internship Programme. These roles will be based at the head office in Pretoria and various other provinces in South Africa. This opportunity aims to provide practical experience and invaluable insights into the industry, preparing interns for their future careers in geoscience.

Benefits of the Internship Programme

Interns will receive a stipend of R 13,000 per month, along with exposure to critical industry operations and the opportunity to apply academic knowledge in real-world situations. As an intern, you will:

  • Review prospecting reports, extracting crucial prospecting data and information.
  • Monitor mineral rights applications bi-annually.
  • Participate in geo-scientific investigations or research under supervision.
  • Contribute to statutory and occasionally commercial projects, publishing research findings internally or externally.
  • Give formal scientific or technical presentations at conferences or symposia.
  • Offer scientific advice to the public and private sectors within established guidelines.
  • Learn to conduct work within the required ISO standards.

Eligibility Criteria

Interested candidates should possess the following qualifications, knowledge, and experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • An Honours Degree in Geology, Economic Geology, Exploration Geology, or a related geoscience field.
  • A valid driver’s license (C1) will be an added advantage.

Key behavioral attributes and required skills include:

  • Customer orientation.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work in a team and collaborate.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in report writing.
  • A sense of urgency and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Computer literacy.
