Discontinuation of the Educare N4 – N6 [Updated]

    We recently published an update on the discontinuation of the Nated Engineering programme. It seems that will not be the only programme that will be discontinued by the DHET. The Eduacare N4 – N6 is the new addition to the growing list of programmes that will be discontinued by the Department of Education.

    Discontinuation of the Educare N4 - N6

    The Report 191 Educare programme is being discontinued at all TVET Colleges. The discontinuation/phase out date provided by the Department of Higher Education and Training is 01 January 2024. Therefore, there will be no new enrolments into the programme at N4 in 2023.  The offering of N5 and N6 certificates will be phased out, and aligned to the last date that will be granted for the last N6 students in the system to obtain their N6 certificate.

    This programme has been a driving tool for building a career around working with children between the ages of birth to 4 years. It certifies you into teaching children and preparing them for grade R. It also includes equipping you to stimulate the child and creating interesting, stimulating and fun activities.

    With this qualification you can pursue a career as a Day Care Manager, Pre-School Teacher, Au Pair or entrepreneur.

    Students complete three certificates (N4-N6) and 18 months of in-service training, at the end of which a Diploma in Educare is awarded. The course structure is laid out so that you can follow a stream that suits your requirements. The subjects for the various streams are as follows:

    • Day Care Communication N5
    • Educare Didactics (Theory and Practical) N5
    • Educational Psychology N5
    • Entrepreneurship and Business Management N4

    N6

    • Day Care Communication N6
    • Educare Didactics (Theory and Practical) N6
    • Educational Psychology N6
    • Day Care Management N6

    Each level takes 6 months full time to complete (total of 18 months to complete the theory) and then 18 months practical. Generally, it takes 3 years to qualify for a National Diploma.

    Students currently enrolled for this course will be given the opportunity to complete the programme during 2023. Any subject repeats will be accommodated through part-time students during 2024.
