We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2024 SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecological Condition is now open.
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), in collaboration with the Centre for Statistics in Ecology, Environment, and Conservation (SEEC) at the University of Cape Town is offering a postdoctoral fellowship. This fellowship aims to bolster research, modeling, and mapping endeavors concerning land degradation and ecological conditions in the Southern African region.
SANBI Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecological Condition Eligibility
Education:
- Applicants must have completed a PhD in the last five years or submitted their PhD thesis for examination.
- If the selected candidate hasn’t been awarded their PhD, the fellowship is limited to 6 months pending proof of their doctoral degree.
Nationality:
- Special emphasis on applicants from South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, and Malawi.
- Non-South African applicants must bear visa application costs and secure it before commencement of the fellowship.
Skills and Experience:
- Strong ecological background, with a preference for experience in southern African biomes.
- Independent work ethic bolstered by a peer-reviewed publication record.
- Familiarity with remote sensing, GIS techniques, advanced statistics, and spatial modeling.
- Proficiency in R and Google Earth Engine is highly beneficial.
- Demonstrable ability to conduct research, synthesize literature, and make defendable recommendations.
- Coordination skills, especially regarding establishing a community of practice for ecological condition in South Africa.
Research Areas:
- Assessment of ecological condition and land degradation research for South Africa and neighboring countries.
- Identifying knowledge gaps regarding ecological conditions and land degradation.
- Development of regional remote sensing tools and models.
- Consolidation of key remote sensing ecosystem data into a spatial database.
Fellowship Value:
- Fellowship of R350,000 per year for three years.
- This fellowship is tax-free, with UCT managing the stipend as per their protocols. There will also be provisions for some annual running expenses.

- Include a comprehensive CV.
- Attach certified copies of ID and academic records.
- Provide two reference letters (with one from an academic supervisor).
- Include examples of published work.
- Submit a motivation letter detailing applicant’s suitability in terms of skills, experience, and research.
