In an era where effective communication is crucial, the ability to convey complex research in a concise and engaging manner can set scholars apart. The UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition offers Masters and PhD students a unique platform to showcase their research talents.

The UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Virtual Competition is not just another event; it’s a testament to the vibrant research community at UCT. Scheduled to be held online on Thursday, the 28th of September 2023, the competition is an exceptional opportunity for Masters and PhD students to share their research journeys and results with a wider audience. The challenge? Presenting their research effectively within a mere three minutes.

An international concept, the 3MT competition encourages students to present their ideas and findings in a manner that captivates even those unfamiliar with the subject – all in just 180 seconds.

3MT Online Competition Eligibility

  • Participants should be enrolled as Masters or PhD students at UCT.
  • Participants should be at a stage in their research where they have findings to share.
  • Those interested in challenging themselves, honing their presentation skills, and gaining recognition for their research are encouraged to participate.

3MT Online Competition Application Procedure

  1. Voluntary Preparatory Workshops: To assist participants in mastering the art of brief and clear presentations, UCT is organizing two voluntary online preparatory workshops:
    • Preparing for the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition: Scheduled for Tuesday, the 22nd of August.
    • Preparing for the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition (REPEAT): Initially planned for Friday, the 25th of August, this workshop has been rescheduled to Thursday, the 24th of August due to scheduling conflicts.
  2. Registration for the 3MT Competition: After preparation, participants can then register for the main event. Registration is essential, with only 81 seats available. To enter the UCT 3MT Competition, Begin Registration here.
  3. Present and Compete: Selected participants will present their research online on Thursday, the 28th of September 2023, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The most compelling presentations will be recognized and rewarded.

Application Dates

  • Preparatory Workshop 1: Tuesday, the 22nd of August 2023
  • Preparatory Workshop 2 (REPEAT): Thursday, the 24th of August 2023
  • Deadline for 3MT Competition Registration: Wednesday, the 30th of August 2023, at 12h00 (midday).
  • 3MT Competition Date: Thursday, the 28th of September 2023, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Prizes await the best presentations in both the Masters and PhD categories, with winners in the PhD category advancing to the National 3MT Virtual Competition. National competition prizes range from R11,000 to R16,000.
