The Bureau for Economic Research (BER) proudly announces the commencement of its recruitment process for the 2024 Economist Internship Programme. We are dedicated to providing hands-on training to suitably qualified individuals, with a specific focus on empowering previously disadvantaged individuals.
The BER Economist Internship Programme is a comprehensive training programme that prepares trainees to work competently as economists in both private and public sectors. As part of the programme, which spans one year, candidates have the unique opportunity to collaborate with experienced BER economists, gaining comprehensive exposure to business-oriented economic analysis.
Since 2006, the BER has successfully trained numerous economists who have proceeded to illustrious careers at leading financial institutions, the South African Reserve Bank, the National Treasury, and other prominent research institutes.

Eligibility
Suitable candidates will be selected based on the Bank’s commitment to diversifying its workforce. To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens.
- Hold an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics by January 2024, with Macroeconomics as a subject at a post-graduate level.

- Specify your university and the highest degree you currently hold. If your degree is not listed, select “Other” and provide details.
- Attach full academic records for your tertiary qualifications (2mb maximum, PDF or Word documents only).
- In the ‘Additional Information’ section, indicate your preference for full-time employment after the trainee year.
- Specify if you have completed (or are currently enrolled in) an internship/trainee programme. If “yes”, provide details of the programme.
- Write a compelling statement explaining why you are the best candidate for the internship.
After filling in all the necessary details, click “Register” to submit your application.
