North-West University’s Faculty of Health Sciences is excited to announce an opening for a Counselling Psychology Internship (TBR00326) on its Potchefstroom campus. This opportunity is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in counselling psychology. The application deadline for this fixed-term contract position is 21st July 2023.

North-West University (NWU) stands at the forefront of health sciences education and training. This internship opportunity allows aspiring psychologists to contribute to the clinical practice within the Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP) and complete an internship as required by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) under the supervision of a permanent Counselling Psychologist.

Role and Responsibilities

As an intern psychologist at NWU, your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Psychometric & Psychological Assessments of children, adolescents, and adults.
  2. Providing counselling and/or psychotherapy.
  3. Handling Trauma, HIV, Psycho-Legal & Community matters.
  4. Participating in an internship training program and supervision.
  5. Ensuring ethical and professional matters.
  6. Managing practice and handling entrepreneurial matters.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this internship, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Have completed year one of a 2-year MA/MSc in Counselling Psychology (NQF level 9).
  • Be registered with the HPCSA as an Intern Psychologist.

Functional/Technical Competencies

  • Proficient in psychological assessment of clients using HPCSA recognized psychometric instruments.
  • Ability to conduct case presentations and multi-disciplinary groups discussions.
  • Commitment to attending individual and group supervision on a weekly basis.
  • Ability to conduct client or case relevant research (i.e., diagnostic or therapeutic information) and theoretical conceptualization.
  • Capable of handling administrative responsibilities.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team.
  • A reference letter from Supervisor is required when applying.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
