This article contains information on the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Application form and Requirements for admission into the following programmes for the 2024 academic year.

Applications to study for the listed postgraduate programmes above in 2024/2025 are now open for both internal and external applications. INTERNAL APPLICANTS are students currently registered at NMU for the 2024 academic year. EXTERNAL APPLICANTS refer to any graduate who meet requirements for the qualification.

NELSON MANDELA UNIVERSITY, NMU POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Admission to honours programmes:
  • Applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s degree or other qualifications approved by Senate.
  • In most cases applicants must have obtained an average of at least 60% in the related third year major subject.
  • Other and additional requirements relating to the level of competence achieved for the bachelor’s degree may be stipulated by the faculty.
Admission to postgraduate certificate and diploma programmes:
  • A candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree and/or an honours degree or another suitable qualification approved by Senate.
  • Other and additional requirements relating to the level of competence achieved for the bachelor’s degree may be stipulated by the faculty.

Admission to master’s programmes:
  • A candidate must hold an honours degree or other qualifications approved by Senate.
  • A candidate may be required to fulfill further requirements as prescribed by Senate.
Admission to doctoral programmes:
  • A candidate must hold an master’s degree or four year professional bachelor’s degree or other qualifications approved by Senate.
  • A candidate may be required to fulfill further requirements as prescribed by Senate.

General Postgraduate Application Procedure

Prospective postgraduate students who wish to study at Nelson Mandela University in 2022 are invited to apply online for a postgraduate certificate, diploma, honours, master’s or doctoral degree using their online application system.

Before completing an application form, please take note of the minimum admission requirements for the qualification that you are applying for or refer to the relevant faculty guide. Postgraduate masters and doctoral applicants must also complete the relevant Postgraduate form (U24)

Postgraduate U24 application forms must be submitted to: postgraduateadmission@mandela.ac.za

  • Your application form must be accompanied by:
    • a certified copy of your matriculation/school leaving certificate,
    • certified copies of your diploma/degree certificates plus academic record(s) and certificate(s) of conduct,
    • a certified copy of your ID,
    • a certified copy of the identity document of your parent/legal guardian/surety,
    • declaration by your parent / legal guardian / surety if you are a dependant, or studying at a higher education institution, or do/will not have permanent employment when applying or studying at the University.

  • The outcome of your application will be conveyed to you via our website (by tracking your status) and SMS. Please ensure that we have your correct cell phone number.
  • If you are admitted, you will receive registration information in November/December.
  • Final acceptance depends on the submission of your final academic record and certificate of conduct if you are currently studying elsewhere.

Application procedures for research master’s or doctoral applicants

  • A prospective master’s or doctoral student must contact the relevant Head of Department or Director of School (academic managers) to discuss the proposed field of study, and to identify a suitable supervisor who will advise the candidate on a preliminary research topic, before applying for admission.
  • The suitability of the proposed field of study or preliminary research topic will also be based on the extent to which it falls within the academic unit’s research focus areas.
  • The completed application forms, plus proof of payment of the application fees, may then be handed in or mailed to Admissions.
  • The application form contains information regarding the candidate’s academic and other qualifications, relevant competencies and experience, as well as the proposed field of study/preliminary research topic.
  • After being processed, the application forms are sent to the faculty officer who consults with the relevant academic manager and supervisor to ensure that the candidate adheres to the relevant institutional and faculty-specific and programme-specific admissions criteria.
  • Once the application has been approved, the prospective candidate will be notified in writing and may then register for the qualification.

NMU Postgraduate Application Fee

  • Application fee for Postgraduate applications is R500

UPDATING YOUR APPLICATION

You need to submit additional documents to the Admissions Office. This may include the following:

  • Certified paper copies of documents uploaded online as part of your application
  • Academic transcripts which may not have been available at the time of your application must be uploaded to our student system; please log in using your username and password, and complete the submission; certified paper copies of such uploaded documents must be submitted
  • Where applicable, evidence of English language proficiency must be provided

SUBMISSION DATES FOR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS AND ACADEMIC RECORDS

The NMU University reserves the right to cancel any application if all the necessary certified paper copies or original transcripts are
not submitted on time.

NMU POSTGRADUATE APPLICATION DEADLINE

In order to ensure adequate time for application, processing and planning by the University and yourself, applications for early admission in 2022 should be submitted by August 2024. Places in some qualifications are limited, and it is therefore in your best interest to submit your application form and ALL supporting documentation as soon as possible. Late applications may be considered after this date, if there is still space available in the course you wish to apply for, and on academic merit until October 30, 2024.
